University of Florida wants to push for more Int. Students

University of Florida is 17th overall in the USA for total number of International Students (around 3,900 overall), but the Administration is really pushing to get that number higher. As an Alumni I would love to see the campus get more as well.

What about Aid mate?? We cant pay the hefty $$$$

Yeah, same question here.

Why would the University of Florida want to do this? Are they simply looking for price insensitive buyers? I doubt financial aid will be offered. This is about lining the coffers with out-of-state tuition money.

<a href="http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/416687-ny-times-study-foreign-students-added-economy.html%5B/url%5D">http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/international-students/416687-ny-times-study-foreign-students-added-economy.html</a></p>

International Students pay out-of-stat tution. This is only around 17k a year for Undergraduate tuition. Keep in perspective housing is disgustingly cheap in Gainesville (only like $350 if you get something modest).

I did the calculations, and if you add up the intagibles as well (food, clothing, health insurance) it ends up being around 90k for the entire 4 year experience.

If you think that is too expensive, then you need to keep in perspective that Boston University, University of Miami, and Pepperdine will cost well over 300k total. Also UF graduate schools love to take UF undergraduates, so keep that in perspective.

So in summation you get a top education for 1/3rd the price of some of the private universities in the United States.

So no financial aid at all, right?

They give financial assistance to internationals...there are some here that are paying close to nothing. Even still 90k is a drop in the bucket in comparison to the earning potential in South Florida with a UF diploma. Keep in perspective to get free money you guys have to have outstanding stats.

Here is the thing. I was not an International student, so I do not know who you will contact to get that information. I will make a couple phone call and get back to you guys in a little while. Sorry for the delay.

That's irrelevant. International students are supposed to leave the country after graduation and outside the US no one knows UF.

b@r!um: People know about UF outside US, mainly through Gatorade and the fact that it gets high rankings. (Not too accurate, but then again, not every international applicant goes to collegeconfidential.)

Wait... I know Gatorade and I know UF but I can't think of any connection between the two of them...

Never mind, I googled it. Why do people in other parts of the world know which university's football team the beverage was invented for?

Most people on my part of the planet have never heard of US college rankings. In the public opinion American universites can be classified as follows: they are either expensive private elite universities or crap - and UF is obviously not the first one. I know this is not true, but it's what most people here think...

On the other hand, b@r!um, in a lot of countries any degree from US is considered gold. Irrational, yes, but that's how it works.

Yeah, I know. But the value of a UF degree in CA does not really correlate to the value of a UF degree overseas (whether that's high or low).

Originally I just wanted to point out the irony of trying to recruit international students by referring to the employment prospects in Southern California.

Total Research Expenditure = Prestige

UF does well over half a billion a year in research. Has over a billion in the endowment, and has a $4.3 billion operating budget.
