University of Georgia or University of Maryland

I am definitely applying to 8 schools, but I was going to add either UGA or UMD as my 9th choice just as a another safe school. I live in Maryland so the tuition will be low for me to attend UMD, but I have also heard negative reviews about UMD about how the classes are large and how much students practically party everyday there. I know UGA is practically the same, but I was leaning toward it because of its great Pre-vet program and Veterinarian school since I want to become a Veterinarian. What are other people's opinions?

anyone…

I’m definitely biased because I’m from GA but I’d take UGA over UMD anyday. Athens is a great college town and UGA is huge, plus the D-I sports there are bigger than Maryland’s. However, UMD does have that proximity to DC which is nice. Still, I think I’d take UGA. The pre-vet program is great but you may change your mind (tons of college students do).

However, in your situation - do you have any financial safety schools? UMD may be the smart choice because of the in-state tuition. Personally I might apply to both - it’s not going to be that much more work doing 10 schools than there is 9.

I would take UGA anytime, I was at Maryland today and didn’t really get a good impression of the school/students there.

^ Probably had something to do with your Clemson tee-shirt :)

What are the 8 schools on the definite list? Maryland makes sense as a financial safety. Michigan State and Wisconsin also have great vet schools. If you already have 8 on the definite list, I would consider applying to neither unless the 8 on list are all a reach. It’s highly unlikely you’ll pick the ninth choice or the tenth choice and you will just be wasting time and money.

My 8 definite schools are Cornell, Boston U, Northeastarn U, Johns Hopkins, UPenn, American U, Duke U, and Washington U in St. Louis

haha yeah, well I think the majority reason is that here at Clemson, we’re very friendly to our visiting football fans, we invite them for a beer at tailgates and have conversations with them, not so much at Maryland probably haha

that was a rough loss yesterday though

UMD is a better school. If you are instate it would be DUMB to consider UGA over it.

^
better, but not by leaps and bounds. IMO, UGA would have a better atmosphere, but I’m looking at both schools. UMD being close to DC is nice.

Between the two, I would go UMD. I know a kid that goes there and thinks he’s got nothing but good things to say. I’ve never been to UGA though, so… I like the idea of applying to both.

As to visiting UMD football, I had a great experience. I went there for a football game, wearing a UVA shirt no less, and I still had a pretty good experience. There were some idiots sitting behind us, but they were shut down by the scoreboard :-D

I’m biased. I’m from Georgia, and thus, I like UGA. The Honors programs there is pretty darn good, though, and there are plenty of classes there and professors who are awesome.

That said, money comes first. You want a safety, make sure it’s also a financial safety. However, if you have any questions about the pre-vet program - I actually have a friend in that program there. If you have any questions about it, feel free to ask me, and I’ll forward the questions to her.
