Wow. Part of the embezzled funds were charity donations.

As a person who has working in Accounting & Finance for 25 years every one that embezzles never has an exit strategy. Eventually you will be caught. You can’t hide things forever.
I have been treasurer for several organizations, ranging from the road association on our road with 13 houses all the way up to our church with a large annual budget. Without exception, I am SHOCKED at how little attention organizations pay to financial matters. When I was asked to be treasurer at our church, I was surprised that not a single audit had been performed in the church’s 15-year history. I told them I would take the position only after an audit was done. Nothing untoward was discovered, but the auditor made quite a few suggestions about how things could be handled better.
I used to get very nervous before annual meetings where I needed to present a treasurer’s report. Then I realized nobody even cares. No one asks any questions at all.
I can see why it’s so easy for people to embezzle money.
@MaineLonghorn I have seen it too. No one ever wants to get into the details. That might require thought and work.
I have noticed since taking over as co-treasurer at our church that a lot of people don’t pay much attention to the reports. Most of the questions I get from the deacons would involve anything that was in the miscellaneous expense category so I have started footnoting an explanation for anything that winds up in that category. Mostly they want to know account balances and if we are on target with the budget. Of course it has always been a volunteer position so I guess expectations are not that high. In the last few years it has been split into 2 positions, one that handles day to day transactions and one that tracks individual contributions and prepares reports. The woman I replaced resignedj(after speaking with the pastor) right before news was released that she was under investigation for embezzelment during her years as county administrator. She is now in prison, apparently our church had better procedures in place than our county.
