I am a high school senior from Nebraska.
I was recently accepted to UHM. I got a 26 on the ACT and have a 3.4 GPA. I want to go to UHM to study art, specifically ceramics and glass. Does anyone know from personal experience about the art program?
I also want to know about dorms... are they really as crappy as everyone says? This doesn't matter much to me as long as they are livable and don't smell particularly awful.
I have heard over and over that UHM has crap academics, ****ty dorms, and that the locals are racist to haoles (yes, I am a white guy from Nebraska.)
Does anyone have personal experience going here out of state for undergrad? This would be the most useful information for me.
Does UHM have any kind of scholarships for out of state kids?
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Does it really take six years to graduate? I would not be able to go unless I am sure I can graduate in four years (BFA.)
Thanks

I live in HI. Most of my sibblings went in-state to UHM. Many of our friends also got their degrees from UHM. I attended UHM for freshman year & enjoyed their honors program and honor societies I joined much more than the sorority I tried to pledge but ended up quitting. I transferred to UOregon, mostly to get out of state (would otherwise have been content with getting my undergrad degree from UHM). Many of the people in our state and from out of state get their educations at UHM–they have some very well-regarded departments and professors.

There are a lot of people of all races who enjoy getting their education at UHM. It has recently renovated many of its dorms and they are gorgeous and quite reasonably priced.

Their FAid office would know the most about scholarships for out-of-state students.

I would talk with the Fine Arts folks to find out how long most of their students take to get their BFA. All of my sibs and most folks we know got their bachelor’s degrees in 4 years. H took 7 years, but was working his way through college & changed majors several times.

Racism depends on where you hang out & YOUR attitude.

Thanks for your help
