University of Iowa

I'm from Maui.
I've never been anywhere near Iowa.
Don't know much about UI other than that it's in Iowa City, which is supposed to be a great college town. Good football games. Lots of parties. I'm assuming farming is big?

...and of course: creative writing.

I love to write. Iowa is supposedly the best in the country. It is affordable and intriguing.

But I don't know much. Please tell me more. Is the writing program easy to get into? How large are the class sizes? Housing? Weather? Anything?

In business and academic settings, the U of Iowa alumni that I have encountered were top notch people.

UIowa is a fantastic place. Beautiful, relaxed town with interesting people, top notch programs, affordable, friendly...best known perhaps for the Writer's Workshop which is perhaps the best of its kind, which is an MFA program, but the English department faculty is excellent and I'm sure undergrad options are great too. So, admission to the Writer's Workshop masters' program is among the toughest in the world for writers, but admission to the College as an English major is not overhwelmingly difficult, that's my understanding.

where are the iowa homies at?

It's a wonderful place...great college town, serious academics, and it's significantly smaller than most other Big 10 schools.

farming is never as big as you think...

It might be a difficult transition to go from Maui to the middle of the country.
I went to Des Moins, Iowa once for a few days. Everything moved so sllllloooooowwwwwllllyy. (I'm from San Francisco)

Well a popular slogan here is "I not late, I stay on Hawaiian time", so I really doubt that the moving slowly thing would be a problem.

What I am concerned about is the size of classes/interaction between profs and students, and the writing program.

Iowa City and the surrounding area is quite pretty (by Midwestern standards). It's not flat and barren like you'd think. I was a grad student in English at Iowa for a while, and was very impressed with the whole scene there.

I'm thinking of applying there but it is so big that I'm afraid that I will get lost.

Well, my whole family went there and I also applied. I have been to tons of football and basketball games and from the times that I was there, the campus is very nice by a lot of standards. It is a nice mixture of old and new (although the med school buildings are less than nice) Also, even though it is a large school, there is a sense of community, especially when it comes to sports. The writing program, from what I hear, is very very competitive. My uncle applied and he was denied, though he is a writer now, so they only take the best of the best.

Best of luck to you....go Hawks!
