University of Kentucky

Does anyone have experiences/suggestions about the University of Kentucky? I am a high school Junior who is trying to look at colleges in the Midwest. I am planning to major in Biology (BS) and possibly minor in statistics

In addition, does anyone have any comments on their Biology Department (quality, how easy it is to get scholarships, effort they put into helping students find major-related jobs, etc.)???

I'm about 45 minutes from UK. As far as the atmosphere, if you are an atypical student I wouldn't recommend it. It somewhat has the feel of the stereotypical college community (i.e. sorority, frat, basketball loving ; ).) The campus is rather spread out, but I really love Lexington. It's a nice, medium sized town that has a good amount to do. I know that you will have fun if you choose UK, but don't expect an artsy, unique university. As far as academics go, UK is definitely a solid school and I know that their science department is among the best, if not the best, of all the studies they offer. UK is one of the best schools in the state of Kentucky, plain and simple. Concerning scholarships, these are in-state of course, I know that with good grades and a 31 on the ACT you can get full tuition. If you went to GSP, you only need a 28 for full tution. I know that there are other scholarships offered for lower scorers as well. My mom used to teach there, so if you have any more questions I could proabably give you a decent answer. Hope that helped!

I think the poster above pretty much sums it up. UK is the best undergraduate science program in Kentucky, I would think, definitely above U of Louisville. Really kind of heavy on the frat/sorority thing, and obsessed with basketball like you wouldn't believe.
Good luck!
