University of Louisiana Lafayette Petroleum Engineering program

Hi. I'm a college grad with a degree in computer science looking to go back and major in PE. I've had a bunch of admissions to Wyoming, Montana, Alaska, WVU... but I'm most interested in ULL. Does anyone know if it is a good program. Job prospects and ties to industry? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

I don’t know specifically about ULL but here are some rankings:

1 Texas A&M University–College Station
2 University of Texas–Austin
3 Stanford University (CA)
4 Colorado School of Mines
4 University of Oklahoma
6 Louisiana State University–Baton Rouge
7 University of Tulsa (OK)
8 Texas Tech University
9 Penn State University–University Park
10 New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology

Generally, it sounds like UT & TAMU are a step above the rest. Mines, OU, and LSU are talked about a lot as well. I’m no expert though.

ULL doesn’t have too good of a reputation from what I’ve heard and read. LSU is a much better choice if you want to go to school in Louisiana. I posted some info regarding ULL’s SPE student chapter report from last year in another thread that mentioned that their graduates were having a difficult time finding jobs due to the economy and the Gulf oil spill. Maybe things are different this year, I don’t know.

You should consider that most programs specialize in the region that they are located. If you want to work in the gulf, go to school along the gulf (Lousiana/Texas). If you want experience inside the continental US, then consider OU, Montana Tech, Colorado School of Mines or NMT. I personally want to work in the arctic and am therefore transferring to UAF this Fall.

Thanks guys. I’ve applied to LSU and I’m still waiting for a decision. Hopefully my late application doesn’t bite me in the ass. I definitely want to go to school along the gulf and hopefully get to work there in the future.

I’m at ULL…everyone I know that doesn’t hate LSU (just because) says LSU is the way to go.

I also applied to LSU about 2 weeks ago for a second degree in Petroleum. I have a Bachelors in chemical Engineering.

In addition, I applied to texas tech and University of Houston, but Texas tech denied me, not sure why though.

Hopefully I hear back from LSU this week. I’ve scheduled a trip to Louisiana to visit both ULL and LSU. Hey triathlonrunner tell me a little bit more about ULL. How have your graduates been doing in the job market. Do you guys get a reasonable amount of internships? On campus recruiting from oil companies? How has your experience at the school been in general? Thanks.

Honestly, ULL is a good school for engineering. I’ve enjoyed my year here but I’m going to LSU this fall. BUT for what it’s worth, everyone says that a LSU 3.6=ULL 4.0 so I’d have to say if all job hiring factors were the same, an LSU grad would win out.

ULL does have a good program though in a smaller setting. and with ULL right here along the coast, you can more likely get a job with an oil company even during the semester.

Update: LSU accepted me, and I’m scheduled for an orientation session on June 29.

Thanks for the info. My thoughts right now are if I don’t get into LSU, I’ll go to ULL at least for a year and reassess later if it is worth transferring to LSU. Congrats Hydro!
