University of Maryland

Does the University of Maryland have private bathrooms in the dorms for freshman???

I don't care if I share a room with someone, I just don't like community showers and I can't use them anyway because I have really bad asthma.

So do they have a bathroom connected to a dorm?

And we wonder why the rest of the world is passing us by.

You should contact the housing office at U of Md and discuss your specific health issues with them. They will be able to advise you about your housing options on campus.

If you have really bad asthma (which can be documented by your doctor), you can request an air-conditioned dorm. Don’t know about the showers, though. That would also have to be documented by a doctor. Lots of people think shared bathrooms are really icky, but you get used to them. If it’s a health issue, it’s another story.

On some floors in some buildings there are dorm rooms that are equipped with their own private bathroom. I know 3rd floor in Denton had a room like it at least on the girls’ side, and I think most high rises have at least one room set up like that.

^^^^yes they do, their also called the RA’s room ;)

Actually it’s special handicap accessible room, typically near the elevator. The RA rooms are tiny, monastic cells of a room that are only worth living in because they’re free :).

haha, somebodynew…tiny, monastic cells is a great description!

All high rise dorms have a number of rooms with private bathrooms. These are either in handicap rooms or in regular quads (I think regular triples may have private bathrooms, too, but I’m not sure). I say “regular” because due to space issues every year UMD converts some doubles into triples or quads by forcing extra beds in them, and in this case there is certainly no bathroom haha. But there are rooms in the dorm with private bathrooms, in conclusion.

However, I have no idea why asthma would require a personal bathroom. UMD will try to accomodate any medically documented need, so call res life. FYI, the community bathrooms tend to be much cleaner than the personal ones. You (and your potentially lazy a** roommates) have to clean out a personal bathroom by yourself. The floor bathrooms are cleaned DAILY by housekeeping personelle and I have never thought they were gross. In fact I never cleaned my bathroom at home daily, so except for the fact that it’s strangers dirt instead of my own, in a non biased light the hall bathrooms are probably cleaner than my personal one at home ever was…(yup, I admitted it). I would wear flip flops and put toilet paper down on the toilet seat, but that’s about it…

umcp11 is right about the bathroom cleanliness issue. The communal bathroom in the larger residence halls freshmen year were much cleaner than in D’s (on-campus) apartment bathrooms last year…

DS will be rooming next yr in new leonardtown with 6 guys and 2 bathrooms, unless 1 of them has a grilfriend I will be stopping at MickeyDees prior to getting there!

As the mother of 2 girls, I beg you…stop at McD’s before you get there. That clean-girl thing is a horrible myth. They may have better aim, but their otherwise slovenly ways make the bathroom gross, nontheless.
