I am a incoming freshman going to the University of Miami. I am a Prelaw major wondering if I should get a laptop for class? I have a psych class, chem class, language class, and theater. I don't know what the typical classroom environment looks like and didn't want to be the only person/loser with a notebook and pen.

Definitely not. Laptops are a convenience, not a necessity. They’re great to have and mobile computing is extremely convenient, but if for whatever reason you can’t or don’t want to get a laptop, your grades are not going to crash and burn. Many people in my lectures still take notes with pen and paper (many of them own laptops themselves but do so so they don’t get distracted on FB and such during a lecture). Additionally, most schools have computer labs for students, and my school even has a laptop checkout program at the library.

So while a laptop would be great to have, it’s definitely possible to go through college without one.

Nope, I have a college friend who only had a desktop. Laptops are for convenience and are better than crappy school computers. Notebook and pen are the way to go. It has been concluded that most people learn/remember better writing than typing anyways.
