Estimated net price:

*

Yikes !! And the NPC doesn’t ask if you’re a frosh or transfer, so we don’t know if the Miami grant will be less for a transfer.

There’s no way you can cover $30k+ with a fed student loan - even with the $4k add’l amount if mom is denied Plus. At most, with fed loans and WS, you’ll still have at least a $17k shortfall.

Very true.

At this point i am just going to hope for as much financial aid as possible. As this is the school of my dreams and i really want to go.

Again, thanks for all of your help.

Please do yourself a favor and dream different dreams. Once you graduate it would be waking up to a nightmare.

What school do you currently attend? Do you have to transfer?

What do you like about UMiami? Maybe there’s another school that will make you happy.

Where else did you apply? Are you at a CC or are you attending a 4 year college?

At this point, the OP can just see what UM does in terms of financial aid. S/he is a transfer from a community college who has shown s/he can do good college work, as evidenced by the acceptance from UM, They do not accept many transfers; the transfer accept rate is lower than first year admissions.

Once the package is here, the OP can see if it is a doable thing, and if not, look into transferring into a state university for the spring term of the following year, local options. But without the package, there is no telling what to do next.

SO i just received my financial aid from UM.

It is definitely not what i was hoping for…Here is the result…

Award Description Category Offered Accepted
Federal Pell Grant Grant 5,645.00 5,645.00
Federal SEOG Grant 1,000.00 1,000.00
Federal Direct Sub Loan Loan 4,500.00 0.00
Federal Direct Unsub Loan Loan 2,000.00 0.00
Aid Year Totals 13,145.00 6,645.00

So…Basically they are only offering me about 14,000 total in aid while they say my yearly tuition is around $60,978

So, i dont see myself making this happen… :-/ What do you guys think?

@twalker I’m actually in the same boat as you. I’ve dreamed of attending this school ever since high school and have successfully been accepted as a transfer student this year. I just received my financial aid award letter today as well and even though I received a little more than you have, I still don’t know if I can make this work :-/. I honestly can’t believe they gave you so little.

If you look through the prior posts (starting at around post 6) you’ll see what we think. You didn’t get a good FA offer (and $6500 of the $14K they offered is a loan). Where would you come up with the additional $46K? You can’t afford to attend UM

@twalkerjr22, Yeah, you couldn’t expect to get much coming in as a transfer, from what I’ve heard (particularly the person in charge of financial aid at the Accepted Student Open House), transfer student financial aid is very limited at the University of Miami, you’ll barely get anything. I’m about in the same about, I’m getting $14k in grants and etc. and a grand total of $22k with loans, still not that great, seeing as my other option (for now waiting on other colleges) UC Santa Barbara gave me 10k in grants and well I only have to pay 19k now, and they’re offering me 19k in loans, which is ridiculous to use all of that… I did visit the U and I thought it was a really awesome school, I came there thinking that it was too expensive, I’m going to barely consider it, but once I left, I really was contending for it and since I looked at my financial aid, I’m not sure if I will be able to attend, mostly because I don’t want to put a burden on my parents.

By the way, you should have submitted your FAFSA a lot earlier like the day it came out, you would probably get more from federal aid if you applied early because all the aid goes fairly quickly at first come, first serve basis from what I’ve seen and heard…

Call them up and tell them what you got on the net price calculator, and remind them that you have a zero EFC. Get the name of your admissions counselor, thank her for all of her help and try to enlist her aid as to advice on how to procede. But even with the NPC, if they gave you what their estimators say they do, on average, for freshman admits, even with the loans, that’s a significant gap.

Lol funny story I was admitted to the University of Miami, they expected me to pay $40,000 a year. No thank you. Obviously this is a rampant issue, now I have 3 confirmed stories of low financial aid offers and am in the same boat as the OP. I already declined them. Go somewhere else.

Wow. I didn’t know my aid package was that good. I received a total package of 40 K 27 grant 13 loan. No way I would be able to come up with the 20+ additional loan unless I went commercial. However, graduating with 70+ in loans is ridiculous. I hope to have around 10 K most by the time I finish med school. Looks like I’m staying in Minnesota, and going to the U of M. It’s unfortunate no schools offer full rides for transfer students.

Hi! I am kinda of like you. I’ve wanted to go to the University of Miami for forever. I’m going to a 2 year school next year to get my Associates degree. But I do plan to transfer. I know this post is from a while ago, but I was just wondering how you paid for this college. With fasfa, i wold only receive 1/4 of the yearly tuition. Is this school just out of my reach financially? Even with the transfer scholarship, to my understanding, it only goes up to 16,000? You have probably graduated now, but I would just like to know.
