I need to choose between University of Miami and Penn State University (main campus: University Park) to study a major in Business.
What university do u prefer?

I'm extremely worried about the reputation of the university. I wanna to attend a selective university, with a lot of recognition, to have the opportunity to get a good job in a future...

Also, I will be a student-athlete, but I don't care about athletics. I am looking for high level in academics!

first thing we’re going to want to know in order to help you is what the net price calculators at each school (or the financial aid packages) say about what the costs to you will be. In addition, when you say you don’t care about athletics but are an SA, does that mean there’s any chance you could cease to be an athlete? would that increase your costs and could you afford that change? Are you in honors at either school? Answer question number one first since it is most important to the decision making.

Penn State: $9,361 average financial aid package
58% of financial need met (average)
Tuition and fees: $16,992 in-state, $29,566 out-of-state

University of Miami: $34,845 average financial aid package
83% of financial need met (average)
Tuition and fees: $42,852 in-state, $42,852 out-of-state

When I say that… I mean that both universities offer me a full scolarship (which includes all the expenses). And I just wanted to let you know that I won’t take my decission based on athletics level… I want to attend an university which cares about academics.

great, the cost to you at both schools is 0, is that right? That really helps. Those who know more than I do about Business at each school can chime in knowing that it’s the academics that matter most to you and cost is no factor and why.

meantime, you can answer my question about your athletic future and honors.

I want you to consider what would happen if you decided to drop athletic participation, if you found it interfered too much with academics, for whatever reason. where would you be better off if that happened?

I’m hoping other people will chime in here about the business schools because I know less about these two business schools. so be patient.

What is your athletic schedule going to be like at each school? This is important if you want to make academics your priority. It’s going to be a big commitment anywhere, but schools do vary in what they expect athletes to sacrifice even in the same sport/league.

I played volleyball and the scolarship is the only way for me to go to US university… so…
I would travel 2 weekends per month, but it depends on the season (Spring or Fall)

Ask each university what academic support exists for athletes; whether you have priority registration; whether the coach can “advise” a major or whether you’ll be entirely free to choose whatever major you want; how the practices are scheduled wrt to class time; whether athletes have access to special tutors; whether you’d be allowed to stay in a “quiet” dorm; what the current average GPA and GPA range is for the students-athletes in your sport; what the current 4-year graduation rate is for students in your sport.
Then compare
Penn State is known for having very good support for student athletes (with high GPAs and high graduation rates) -apparently it’s the only D1 school where the coach donated enough millions to build an entire library wing to show how important academics must be for athletes.
HOWEVER I do not know Miami’s reputation in that regard and I do not know facilities or actual stats, so do ask the questions above.

Yeah, the coach donated money to the library is the same one that helped to cover up child rape to protect the reputation his football program and got the Vice President for Student Affairs fired because she wanted to apply the school’s disciplinary rules to football players. Google Penn State pedophilia scandal (still very much ongoing) and Vicky Triponey if you want to see the priorities of that university.
