I got a deferral with imo good essays, a 35 ACT, and a 3.95 unweighted GPA, among extracurriculars and honors. The thing is I reported my GPA as its weighted form which may have looked weaker or strange due to the restrictions of the common app; in addition to that, I failed to report my AP scores. Is there a way for me to inform Michigan of my interest as well as update/correct my omissions? Michigan is my absolute dream school as a midwesterner and I’d like to up my chances as much as I can.
idk about including your ap scores in your loci because it is an omission and not a new development, but they will see your actual gpa on the seventh semester transcript you send them.
Hi @lrandolph,
I sent in a LOCI the day after I was deferred because I had it perfected even before I got my letter (lol). I sent it in by mail addressed to the director of admissions. My counselor told me to send it to her and not my AO. I was wondering if I should email another copy to either the AO or Director of Admissions because I am worried it did not get to her by mail. Sorry that was a mouthful!
Also, how did you meet your AO? I introduced myself to the lady who came to my school to talk about UM and at my college fair, but I am not sure that is the same person.
Thank you for your help, it is much appreciated. (If anyone else has helpful and accredited advice, that would also be appreciated.)
-Annie
Also, I have done two formal tours so I don’t think it would be wise of me to do another—that would just look odd!
@mwoody999 Who did you send your LOCI to? Also, was it through mail or email? I sent my to the Director of Admissions and I sent it by mail. My high school counselor told me to do it that way, but I am worried it didn’t reach her. Any advice would be great! Thank you.

i dont know why you would be advised to send it to the director of admissions, as they’re not the one reading your application …
My deferral letter included the following statement “Strong recent grades that are available before mid-February 20 may improve your status in the deferred pool of applicants. Therefore, please ask your high school counselor to forward them when they become available.”
Does this mean I have to submit my grades? My grade in a regular English Class is a C, due to having the toughest teacher in the school. Will I still be considered if I don’t send my grades?
@ezga3969 I agree, I just did what my academic counselor told me to do. Should I send one to my AO as well?
I’ve decided to write a letter of continued interest but I have a few questions… should I address my 81 (I know I’m not proud) in AP Chemistry. I know the AO will see it on my transcript but I want to make clear that this class was out of my comfort zone since I am stronger in the humanities (and am pursuing the humanities). Would this be good to show to them? Also, should I reiterate that I will definitely attend because of its a good fit for me but also because my dad and many other family members have attended or is that unnecessary since it’s on my app? Thanks!!!
@kjdoc19 I sent one in by snail mail in the end of December but I am worried it will be lost (lol) or not looked at as closely as an email. How have you decided to send yours?
@blue7898 its says it MAY improve your chances, so you dont necessarly have to send them in if you dont want to, im also debating whether i want to send them in bc my gpa isnt going to go up that much.
also, my counselor told me to talk to the regional/district counselor about my loci which you can find on the umich website
@kjdoc19 like you said they know you’re a legacy and they will know from your “why this college” essay that you’re aiming for a humanities education. AP chemistry is a difficult course for stem inclined kids, too. they know this as well. unless you had extenuating circumstances that made this grade so low, leave it out.
FYI - daughter submitted a LOCI and got no response.
Not a surprise and not reading into it at all, but providing this info as an additional data point for those who have asked on this thread previously about LOCI responses.
Good luck to all!
we are not sending a LOCI as our differed letter explicitly said not to.
*deferred
@letsgoblue1234, I sent my LOCI to the undergraduate counselor listed under my state by email and received a response back the day when UMich opened after the holidays (2 days after I emailed).
We don’t know if sending LOCI helps or not but not sending one will do no good either. They are not going to reject a candidate because they sent a LOCI.
that’s not what it’s about? more often than not, there are several other students with the same statistics and strengths as you. demonstrated interest is one factor they use to break the tie, as they consider yield rates and who would actually attend if admitted.
- also we should be clear that most people sending loci’s are including updated accolades/info about their application, not just to plead your case.
@projectmgr hi, did you send it in by mail or email?
