University of Michigan Class of 2023 - Deferred Applicants

Is everyone sending a continued letter of interest? If so, to whom are you sending it to?

I am getting conflicting advice. Our private college counselor said not to send a LOCI since the deferment email said that “they have everything they need at this time”. Then I hear from other people to send one. I would think it’s better to send one than not. How could it hurt?

well AOs are human and sending a lengthy loci to them if there’s nothing to update them on could rub them the wrong way. if you genuinely have new info to supply them with, and keep it short, i don’t think there’s any reason it could hurt you.

If you label your email Letter of continued interest. You will save the AO a lot of time. It will be put in your folder so when it is reviewed it will be seen… Short and to the point.

But if you truly have new information then send it. Do not reiterate your resume that’s already on the application.

so my deferral letter said that they have everything they need to continue reviw of my application. I am sneding a LOCI because i have a few new awards to mention, but are first semester grades required. I did decent but historically they were a lower compared to my overall high school grades.

not required unless you received the deferral letter strongly suggesting it could help your standing as an applicant. even then it’s not a requirement, but definitely check with your counselor. i know at my school, counselors automatically send 7th semester transcripts to all colleges someone hasn’t been rejected by.

Guys for international applicants, what exactly does a deferral mean? I’m really confused because I got deferrals from both Stanford and U-Michigan (LSA)? So are these basically rejections ?

ok thanks sm

and no my letter didnt encourage grades, in fact it said that i only send what they require and they didnt require anything, it sounded like they were pretty set, also my counsler wont send it unless i ask him too, so i guess just see how things go

@standfordorbust19. Deferral is the same for everyone. You didn’t get in Early Action and your application gets another look during the regular decision round, which you are now in. Early Action is over with.

Regular decision is rolling so when should deferrals hear back?

Once again, deferrals are no different then regular admission at this point. February 1st the fun starts once again till Mid April.

@CaptainRonnie We’re also at a MA HS with several applicants to UM. From the classes of 2016/2017/2018, 42 applied, 6 were accepted, 4 enrolled. I don’t know how many applied this year, but it was a good number and none were accepted EA, including a student who was accepted ED to one of the toughest admits in the country and others with very high test scores/grades/ECs. From my non-scientific survey (aka, gossip around the high school and what they know of students at several other HS in the area who applied to UM), it sounds like deferrals are up. Across several HS, they only know of one person who was admitted to UM, and that was a student who was admitted ED at Johns Hopkins. My take is that a deferral says nothing about the students or their chance of eventual acceptance. UM is simply rolling most students from EA to RD.

@StanfordOrBust19 a deferral means different things at different schools. for UMich at this point a deferral means next to nothing, especially for international apps. however, at stanford a deferral is actually really good, as the acceptance rate for deferred apps is 3x that of their overall acceptance rate. you must be an exceptional applicant because they carefully weed out EA apps to only around 5k deferred, and many receive good news in march. i’d say you shouldn’t worry much about either.

Hi friends, current Umich student here. I was deferred the first time around and was an average applicant. 32 ACT, 4.0 GPA, few APs, and I come from a really small town in Ohio. But the one thing I completely attribute to me getting in was visiting campus right after I was deferred (mid January) and meeting my admissions rep in order to express my interest. You can visit them right after the tours! I also followed up with an email of interest and I was accepted two weeks after. So yeah. Take it with a grain of salt, but I truly believe me showing how much I love Michigan was what got me in. Good luck and keep your hopes up! Michigan is so amazing and I couldn’t ask for anything better

Also PLEASE for the love of god do not stress about different meanings in letters, or numbers. It a complete waste of time and I wish I would’ve known that before wasting half my senior year stressing out. If it’s meant to be, it will be. The best you can do at this point is just to continue to show your interest and basically commit to attending if it’s your first choice. Don’t waste hours on college confidential. Good luck to you all!

Wait, so do deferred applicants hear back starting in February? Or does everyone hear back in early April now? I’m seeing mixed opinions.

idk why it would be mixed lol @malia26 they release them in waves starting late jan (for in-state) or early feb (for oos) and continue through early/mid april. i haven’t seen anyone try to argue otherwise bc they’ve been doing this for years.

fingers crossed!
