University of Michigan Counsler recommendation

Also I know my grade counsler well, though she left during the middle of the year due to a situation ( was also my counsler in 10th grade). I also know the senior counsler well, and she seem to start advising over my class when the counsler left. It’s been said that she wont be returning.

Post 19,
Yeah I don’t think I would have trouble getting essays for multiple teachers, though I thought the university only accepts one.

Also in reply to other post,

I don’t really see how this thread is really entertaining. I think it’s actually annoying when many post “Lol”, in remarks to finding enjoyment from ridiculous behavior of college students ( maybe) online. Though as I always remind myself, many students who I encounter online are not to be taken as a great representive of ones school, really. Especially for large universities such as University of Michigan.

OK guys … before we turn this thread into another classic … why aren’t we trying our best to help him out as we should?

Ok … let me try to understand what you’re saying … so you’re saying that you basically change counselors every year? (That’s horrible btw) My impression would be that your counselors would not know you that well if you do keep rotating between counselors. But if it helps, I would give it to the one who you think knows you best and have them explain in their rec about your situation.

Remember if the counselor recs don’t work that well for you, remember you still have rec letters from 2 other teachers. Pick the teachers who you know very well and who will be able to tell Michigan why you would be a perfect fit for the Michigan campus.

Good luck, and I wish you all the best. If you need help on your essays, CC has a section where you can get other CCers to read your essay. (http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-essays/</a>) Your essays are extremely important, so you’ll want them to be as polished as possible.

^
Thanks

No I mean each counsler is set to be with students from 9th grade until they graduate. The current counsler who have been advising over my class ( since our original counsler had to be removed) was also counsling 9th and 12th grade students. Though this counsler also had other roles as a staff. I’m not completely sure if we will be having a new counsler for the upcoming school year, or a counsler already there. Though I was questioning do your counsler recommendation have to be your class counsler.

Yeah I know the essays are important, though I currently haven’t been able to start any essays for universities. For University of Michigan I’m likely to have my essays on the options 1. A 2. E 3. A, so I already have an ideal.

Coolbrezze don’t worry about the essays: there’s a sweetland writing class at Michigan for people who have trouble with English so you can just take that one. Just be sure to indicate that English is definitely not your first language on your application and they should overlook your frequent grammar and spelling errors.

lol another prime example of why a “lol” is necessary

not sure if it was intentional, but the word is “counselor”.

Coolbrezze, my counselor was only my counselor for 12th grade (we had one for 9th & 10th who left, and another for 11th who left). At my school often times counselors don’t even meet with students once. We’re supposed to fill out some form with some information about ourselves, hand it into the office, and I’m guessing they fill out some template reccomendation letter with 3 things we wrote. UMich probably realizes how it works, they don’t put too much stock into what they say. Don’t worry about it.

anonymous115. The OP never indicated whether he/she was an international alien resident or native born citizen. Somehow I think you knew that anyway when you posted your remarks.

^Actually, he mentioned that he lives in Michigan (IOS) once.

And QwertyKey is spot on … generally admit offices will pay more attention to people who have known you a while and know you well. If your counselor isn’t like that, Michigan probably won’t be putting too much importance on that rec.

rjkofnovi, he’s not. Anon was just being a jerk.

To OP: Your counselor rec barely makes a difference. If you feel more comfortable picking an old counselor, go for it. What does make a difference is your grammar. No, the admission counselors won’t hammer you for every little mistake, but if your essay comes out half as bad as the posts you make on this forum, you will come out looking like a huge idiot.

Thanks for the replies ( excempting the ignorant and rude ones I’ve also recieved).

Also to note, with the most rude and obnoxious post I countinue to get on University of Michigan forum I will no longer use college confidential as a source for me to ask any questions concerning University Michigan ( at least under this forum). I will find a more suited source for such.

Coolbrezze, I am sorry that you’re facing as much scrutiny as you are. You made some grammatical errors but I think people understand your original post satisfactorily.

My suggestion: Ask the counselor who knows you the best to write the recommendation. It will come across more genuine and will stick out amongst the sea of cookie-cutter letters that admissions will read.

Another suggestion: ignore the pointless scrutiny you’re facing on this thread. This is by no means an accurate depiction of the University and its students. Sometimes I am ashamed to see how people represent our school on CC.

The answer is that the reccomender for the counseling office will be the current counselor assigned to you or the principal of the school, at the school’s election, as that is an administrative decision. You do not get to pick and choose this aspect. The counselor, even if new, will be reviewing your statistical performance, your overall school file, your trend, discipline, extra-curricular activity, etc. This is where the chickens come home to roost : ) Your counselor will also be recommending you in the context of the other seniors applying.

The recommendation over which you actually exercise SOME control is the teacher recommendation. Choose to ask the teachers that have the best command of written English and an optimal experience of you in terms of both scholarship and character.

You may also wish to carefully review your essays with a professional or teacher to ensure there is an abundance of clarity. You very often confuse your readers in these posts and always respond to criticism of same saying that you assumed your meaning was perfectly clear. The best way to ensure that your meaning is not misconstrued is to make all your communications examples of a strong command of written English.

^^^In other words coolbreeze I suggest you proofread your remarks before and after you send them. Sometimes reading them out loud to yourself will also help. You can always edit your words for up to 20 minutes after they are posted on this site. I do that myself constantly.

It’s the “University OF Michigan”
