Yesterday I was accepted to University of Michigan LSA. I was very surprised and am highly considering it. I am a direct admit to Kelley at Indiana with a scholarship and got a scholarship at Tulane. I did not receive any money from Michigan. Does anyone know how hard it is to get Merit scholarship (OOS) from Michigan or what steps I need to take?
UM rarely gives out any type of Merit aid or Scholarships. Less than 5% of those accepted get offered any merit aid, so to be honest don’t expect any. However, UM does give out grants but it depends what your income is and if you are OOS or not. If you are lucky to get any Merit aid you will usually be notified from the college you were accepted into separately- it won’t be included in the Financial Aid you get in January, only any grants will. My daughter received an e-mail and a letter from Stamps Art and Design letting her know of her merit scholarship about 2 days after she was accepted Early Action in 2017.
Thank you, do I need to fill out the CSS profile? I am assuming I will not get any aid because our income is high but my father runs his own business so over half the income goes back into the business so we still cannot pay the Michigan tuition.
I believe so. For business owners its all how things are reported on your dad’s business and how much income he shows. It’s a different animal all together. Depending on your situation you could get OOS grant money. Michigan tends to be very fair about this especially if there are 2 in college at the same time.
Without knowing real numbers it’s hard to say but you should know soon.
Pretty much everybody accepted to UMich, especially OOS, will be a high achiever in high school, so it is very difficult to be given a merit based scholarship. If any, it won’t be significant compared to your expected tuition burden.
If you are OOS, keep in mind that if you choose to attend, you are making a choice for which you much accept whatever financial responsibility comes with it. UMich is a public state school, so they have no obligation to financially support anybody OOS.
For your specific situation, it never hurts to fill it out and see what you might get back, even if it is close to nothing. Try and contact a few directors straight from UM’s financial aid office, describing the extremes of your situation.
Just got good news…need some of that right about now…D20 is a LEAD Scholar! She got 5k/year for four years. We are in state, so this is actually pretty good.
The LEAD is an alumni scholarship, not a direct UofM scholarship.
