If the FAFSA thingy says my family can pay 42***, and Michigan is around 45000, will my family recieve exactly 3,000, more, or less. What are my chances of getting help from Michigan. My friend got 40,000 scholarship with lower stats than me so I'm waiting everyday for the mail and a scholarship letter. Will I be helped?

As an OOS student, you will likely get zero FA from UM. And 45k is for just tui and R&B, no living expenses, books or travel. If your friend got 40k/yr, he must have the Shipman or something similar (if there is such a thing), they only give out 25 full tuition plus R&B scholarships, and they usually go to students that are competitive to the most selective schools if you’re in LS&A or Engineering.

p.s. UCB is more expensive at 48k+ for OOS tui, R&B.

*My friend got 40,000 scholarship with lower stats than me so I’m waiting everyday for the mail and a scholarship letter. Will I be helped? *

Are you sure that your friend’s scholarship didn’t TOTAL $40k? Many scholarships say big amounts, but those big amounts are divided over 4 years.

BTW the Shipman is for $20k per year ($12k towards tuition, and $8k towards UMich housing). <a href=“U-M Web Hosting”>U-M Web Hosting;

And, entomom is right, as an OOS student, you won’t get any FA.

Correction: 15 full Shipman, 35 partials.

When D1 got it 3 yrs ago it was full tuition, R&B for OOS students (approx. 40k/yr); and the partial Shipman was worth about 26k/yr for OOS students. Looking at the flyer linked to the current website:

[University of Michigan Office of Financial Aid: OFA Scholarship Listing](http://www.finaid.umich.edu/Types_of_Financial_Aid/Scholarships/ships.asp)

It says:

Don’t know why the difference from your link m2ck. Anyway, it definitely has changed as there used to be a difference between what was given to in-state and OOS candidates. I know that they were having difficult getting OOS students (particularly in LS&A) to accept as many were choosing to attend some of the top privates.

The total award value of this scholarship is approximately $94,000.

So that’s about $23,500 per year. (My link must go to an out of date page. ) So, it looks like it’s increased from $20k per year to $23,500 (still leaving about $25k for the rest of COA - making it similar to an in-state.).

Since the OP is talking about a $40k scholarship, I’m thinking that is for 4 years, not 1 year. He/she says that her friend got it with lesser stats. However, scholarships change year to year, so that may not even be available anymore or may now require higher stats.

COA for UMich is $47,188k for this current year. Next Fall will be higher. The following years will also be higher.

If all you need is about $5k per year, you can always take out Stafford loans.

On another thread, you say that your Math + CR SAT is 1410 (2010 overall). That’s a good score, but I don’t know how good that is for Mich scholarships. Anyone know?

My friend recieved 40,000 total scholarship for four years. He has a 4.31 GPA and 1350 SATs, the GPA is much higher than mine because he goes to a public school, our valedictorian only has around a 4.4. I keep hearing friends say things like “I recieved 76,000 to Auburn” or “Full ride to Vandy”, they’re talking about academic scholarships I assume. Michigan will just give out money is my assumption, as long as people are competitive, right?

No… Michigan’s first and foremost goal is to provide an education to the people of Michigan. It is quite difficult to get any kid of aid (merit or need-based) from an OOS public school, Michigan included.

I keep hearing friends say things like “I recieved 76,000 to Auburn” or “Full ride to Vandy”, they’re talking about academic scholarships I assume

The $76k scholarship to Auburn is likely their automatic scholarship that they give to ALL out-of-state students who have the right stats and apply by Dec 1st. If you had applied, you would have gotten it, too. You need a 1400 SAT or 32 ACT and a 3.5 GPA.

you did miss Auburn’s “priority deadline” but maybe if you quickly applied, they’d still give it to you.

Those who typically get full-rides to Vandy have large need - since it’s a full-need w/o loans school. They do give out some full-tuition (maybe also room and board) as merit, but those are competitive for very high stats. My nephew is there with super stats and he got nothing…

You cannot assume that just because one school offers something, that another school does.

my friend is going to Ohio State and he said that if one gets a liscense in the state and lives there awhile you can get instate tution in later years. BTW, no way in hell do I want to go to Auburn!!! That was just an example… But how does instate work for people that move there? I have a lot of family there.

P.S. thanks for all the help people, this means a lot

^^^

??? what is your question? Are you asking how a person gets in-state residency for Ohio State?

no way in hell do I want to go to Auburn!!!

well, gee, that’s polite. Good luck with your UMich scholarship.

You could:
a. Listen to your friend.
b. Listen to some anonymous person on a discussion board.
c. Google “Ohio State University residency” and get your information from the primary source.

Wonder what a UM scholarship kid would do ;)??

Agree about the Auburn comment, no need for that kind of 'tude, especially when you’re asking for help.

Do you know what kind of stats they are looking for for UMich scholarships? I have a 4.4 W GPA, 3.85 UW. 2230 SAT. I was accepted about 3 weeks ago, but I’ve only received one other thing from them in the mail since. I am considering UMich, but I need the scholarships because, as this forum has noted, it is extremely expensive for out of staters. Oh, I’m from Southern California.

krazie…

You have the stats to be competitive for the UMich scholarship. :)

The Auburn comment is out of context, if you only knew the group at my school that is Auburn bound. Extremely rich but think living in North Carolina is a reason to fly confederate flags on their massive, expensive, lifted trucks and to wear cowboy boots to a uniformed private school and exagerate their accents. Auburn probably is konwn differently in differently places but it does not has the best reputation at my school. And yes, a UM scholarship student should search for a primary source but I’ll have you known I’ve done everything I can from calling the school long distance, to reading books at two libraries and Borders book store and talking with counselors… I’m trying!!! but thanks for the info people.

You may get a scholarship from UMich, or you might not. Your M+CR SAT is very good, but not likely high enough for a top merit from UMich.

So, are your parents willing to pay full-freight at UMich? If not, what are your other choices?

BTW…I don’t know anyone who wears cowboy boots at Auburn - they wear Sperry’s and Rainbows. Nor do they drive lifted trucks. It’s a preppy school, with an excellent engineering program.

my parents are capable of about 25000 per year, i think a scholarship to supplement my parents pay is the only way ill be able to go

Your friend is WRONG. That is NOT all it takes to get instate tuition in Ohio. Unless your friend’s family is also moving to Ohio a full year before he plans to enroll in college, he will NOT be getting instate tuition in Ohio.

*my parents are capable of about 25000 per year, i think a scholarship to supplement my parents pay is the only way ill be able to go *

You might get lucky and get a $10k per year scholarship to UMich, but you’d still be short of the $50k COA for OOS students for UMich.

So, what are your other options? Where else can you afford to go?

What is your EFC?

i think our EFC is 42*** something, UNC and NC State are my other option, contingent that I get into UNC. NC State is known for engineering but it doesn’t suite me, EVERYONE from my school goes to these two schools and I can’t help but want to be different and Michigan’s reputation is far greater than NC State though going to NC State isn’t at all a bad thing, I just REALLY want to go to Mich. UNC doesn’t have to offer what i want, engineering, but it does have a good business school which i may try for. These schools are 16000 per year.

UM offers some good OOS scholarships to VERY top students & to targeted groups (such as nursing students). If you are lucky enough to get an academic scholarship, you will know when they inform you … not before. In other words, no one here can say if you’ll get one. My gut reaction to your question is no. I could be wrong, though.

As far as need based aid goes, Stafford loans & parent PLUS loans will be your only aid with a $42000 EFC. That I can say for sure.
