I was accepted to Michigan EA to the school of LSA and recently accepted to UCLA with Biochemistry as my intended major, im OOS at both schools. However, at MIchigan i would receive enough money from the school to cover the entire OOS tuition plus a little extra. As where at UCLA i barely received enough to cover half the OOS tuition, so in order for me to go to UCLA it would cost around another 32,000$ a year after all expenses. Honestly if it wasn’t about the money i would chose to go to UCLA, California is where i want to end up as where Michigan is cold and Ann Arbor feels fairly residential (not much to do). Would it be worth is to accumulate the debt by going to UCLA and pulling out the loans or should i go to U of M, which would certainly be less stressful? I just personally feel like UCLA is the better school, but ranking wise that isn’t really true…
Looks like you are going to be a Wolverine! Congratulations. I have never met a U Michigan alum who did not rave about their experience there. I have also never heard anyone say that there is “not much to do” in Ann Arbor.
[No, UCLA is not a “better” school… academically and reputation-wise, they are equivalent. It would be ridiculous to have to pay over $100K more for UCLA.]
You will be amazed at how much there is to do in Ann Arbor. It has a large cities worth of activities rolled into walking distance for students. Sports of all sorts, music recitals, bands and orchestras, clubs, bars, student groups, restaurants, theater etc. - most at student prices. In LA you’d be stuck driving to many of the activities, and would probably end up doing a lot less.
You’d end up with $130K of debt for warmer weather. Just buy a heater instead.
Michigan and UCLA are peers. Ann Arbor is not residential. It is a quirky college town a great deal to offer. Save your money and go to Michigan.
