University of Michigan Out of State Financial Aid

So, if your family income is above the need met limit, your need would not be fully met. Nevertheless, the FA office told me that even families with $150k income, many of them will still receive some grant.

Yep! We knew going in that our need wouldn’t be met, but we are so grateful to have gotten something!

For OOS with their need met, they would receive more than $40k in grant. I have heard at least one received that kind of offer already.

@Bella2018 congrats on your acceptance and your OOS grant. We are in a similar position and your grant gives me hope. D was accepted yesterday and is over the moon but I’m so worried that we can not afford it and have to move on. How long did it take for you to get the financial aid package after acceptance? We were told to order a tax transcript by mail which I had no clue we needed until last night. The FA office said we would be lucky if we got a package before May 1st. I don’t understand how we are supposed to accept without knowing the cost? Campus day travel is very expensive and worth it if we can afford the school but a waste of money if she can’t go.
Can anyone shed light on this process and how to make it go faster?

Will your brother graduate while you are in college? Make sure to take that into consideration, because if EFC goes up, need based aid will go down.

So the gap you have now will be getting bigger.

@PruPru25 did you try the net price calculator on their website? That should give you an idea.

But unless your income and assets qualify for need based aid I would not expect much aid.

It took me about 3 weeks to get my package after I got accepted. I also had to send in a tax transcript, but we sent it towards the beginning. I was told not to expect a package until March-April, but it came it February. I hope you get good news @PruPru25 !

@mommdc , yes I ran the NPC on every school before she applied and everything looked good. Then I found College Confidential and learned that my self employment will skew those numbers so now I don’t know what to expect. My H is disabled and receives SS. D applied to several CCS schools based on our calculations. I feel terrible for being so ignorant of the process. At least she has been accepted to in state schools we can afford but they are not her top choices.

@Prupru25 If you can order the transcript online, you can download it once you verify your account login. Then you can print in out and fax in within a day. If you cannot verify your account by cell phone, they will send the code for verification by mail in a few days. If you have no credit history, like my daughter, then you would have to use the form to request the transcript.

Thank you @billcsho !
I have downloaded and fillled out the form for snail mail but before I send, my H will try the online way you suggest. Faster is best in this case. This acceptance came out of the Wolverine blue and has turned our March upside down!

You may also fax in the form if you cannot download the transcript, it still take weeks to receive the transcript though.

@billcsho Success!! Pdf downloaded and emailed to financial aid!! I am very grateful for your help.

You are very welcome.

“Michigan wants out of state students that can pay full freight. They want to reserve their aid for their own states taxpayers.”

That actually isn’t true. UM is one of the few state schools that provides substantial FA to OOS students, including those from families with incomes up to $150K. Moreover, if you have a family income under $90K, Michigan will meet your full demonstrated need. I’ve worked with several students who fall into that category, and several received FA that covered their full COA. The Provosts Award was established specifically to assist lower-income OOS students.
