Hello all, I currenty go to Michigan State University and have applied to be a LSA 2012 transfer student for my Junior year at UMich. I need some UM experts, when you usually get an answer back? They received my application 11/21/11. My gpa is going up after this semster, but I don't know if a decision will have already been made before I can send them my Fall transcript. What are my chances with

Col gpa: 3.46 (Approx 3.6 after this term)
HS gpa: 3.3
ACT: 24
ECs: Breakdance, job, spartasoft (game design club)
Essays: Amazing, got help from MSU's writitng center (Also got 9 on ACT writing)

Can you add the number of credits you have?

Michigan transfer decisions are rolling, you can get an answer back in theory two weeks after they receive your completed app. However, you will likely not see anything until February at the earliest because they generally donāt give back Fall transfer decisions before they received your fall term grades for the current year. In your case specifically, if you will probably need to wait until near the end because even if we assume that you can get your GPA to 3.6, you are still borderline.

Your chances as of now are good particularly good. I canāt really evaluate you without knowing your credits because for Michigan transfer admissions, GPA and credits are the most important. The closer you get to 55 credits, the less high school counts. Essays and ECs take secondary importance to GPA and credits, they matter but not nearly as much. What they can do for you is push you in, if you are borderline but thatās pretty much it. You will need to work really hard on finals and try to get that GPA as high as you can, 3.6 is pretty much the baseline for someone from MSU.

I have personally transferred successfully into the University of Michigan so if you want to ask me more about this process, feel free to ask. You can PM me, respond here, whatever. Best of luck and Go Blue!

āYour chances as of now are good particularly goodā is a typo, what I meant to say was not particularly good.

Hmm, I see. Well right now I have 26 credits, at the end of this Fall term Iāll have 40. I didnāt know transfer was rolling admissions as well, but how can they do that if they are waiting for my Fall transcript? As for the 3.6, I am working on it. I had no idea 3.6 was āborderlineā. That bites, but I almost positive my gpa after this term will be <3.6 or equal to.

Thanks for the help man, appreciate it. btw, whereād you transfer from?

āIām almost positive my gpa after this term will be <3.6 or equal to.ā I meant >3.6 or equal to. Haha, welp, back to studying for me.

I transferred from the University of Pittsburgh, essentially the same academic tier as MSU. What they do is they donāt actually evaluate your application further until they get your fall transcripts and evaluate you then. One other big problem you have is that you only have 40 credits completed after 3 semesters, which is kind of low. Michigan, for transfer admissions, prefers more credits than less.

I see, I didnāt know the more credits the better, I thought being full-time for 3 semesters is whatād be important. You think I should take like 17 credits for my spring term so theyād be able to see that? Ahhh. Well, all I can do now is pray and wait, lol.

17 would probably be advisable. Have you done a Transfer Credit Evaluation? Because one problem you may have is that you canāt transfer all of your credits and that could make you look even worse. Thatās why having as many credits as possible is a good thing. Also have you taken a foreign language course? Michigan cares about that a lot and when I asked an admissions counselor to look at my transcript, she told me everything was good except I didnāt have a foreign language course and she told me to have one for the next year year. Also, have you been taking real classes, as in the core courses, and not joke classes like weightlifting? Because with the number of credits you have, every little bit counts.

One thing I advise you to do is to go in person to the Michigan admissions office and speak with an admissions counselor. Talk to her and detail your situation as clearly as possible and just have her evaluate your chances. She can also tell you what you can do to maximize your chances. Of course if you donāt get admitted for Fall 2012, there is still the Winter semester if you are still interested and at the very least you can begin preparations for then.

No, actually I havenāt looked at credit transfer evaluation. My worries have just been getting IN to Michigan let alone the credits I can bring with me, but I guess they look at that huh. On the upside though I have been taking a foreign language, Japanese, and all ārealā classes I can assure you. My WRA last semester class was so hard which is why I got a 3.0 in there. Iāve taken Calc, and a handful of other core credit classes. I would go see an admission agent for UM but I wouldnāt be able to do so until I got home in like a week or so. By then, my grades will be posted and from there itās virtually nothing I can do further excpet for send them my Fall term grades. I could add another class to my Spring term to be at 17. Iād have to notify them that there was a change to my planned courses for spring though. I mean it wouldnt be that much of a drag but do you think thatād make or break their decision?

Ahh man, so tense. Though, if I get in, I wonāt regret one second.

Btw, what was your gpa, credits, and act when you transferred?

My high school stats were a 3.6 (UW) GPA, 33 ACT and 23 AP credits, with Michiganās standards. In college, I have a 3.71 GPA and 31 credits, 46 pending, when I was accepted for Winter 2012. Michigan has accepted 43 of my college credits. If you look at the number of credits I have strictly from college, itās not that much more than yours but I also had 23 AP credits already completed so I didnāt take any 17 or 18 credit semesters since Michigan only accepts 60 external credits and it would be a waste of time for me to get more.

One thing I did forget to mention is that if you earned that GPA taking math and science type classes, it could give you a boost. The trend I noticed is that people in hard science type classes tend to be accepted with lower GPAs than people with social science and humanities type classes. For someone taking majoring in the hard sciences, they could potentially get accepted with a 3.55+ but for someone majoring in the social sciences and humanities, 3.7 is pretty much the cutoff.

I still think itās a good idea for you to go talk with the admissions counselors, it at least gives you a good idea of where you stand and what to expect. Besides, if you donāt get accepted for this semester, you still might be interested in the next semester so it could also prepare you for then.

Thanks for all the help man, Iāve registered for another 4-credit class putting me at a grand total of 17 credits for the spring term. I shot them an email let them know, now all they need are my current courses and transcript from here, which they will get after Iām threw with all these finals. Youāve been a big help, if I get in, I def gotta meet you. Haha, thatād be cool. Well, I have a final tmrw so Iām gonna go study for that. Later man

Hey dude, if you get notified of this, I got accepted man!! Thanks for all the help. Iāll be starting at Michigan this upcoming Fall 2012. Iām so happy. Maybe Iāll see you around huh? Haha.
