I am going to be a senior in high school in the fall and am wondering what chances ill have when i apply to U of M and U of I.

GPA: 3.85 (will raise based on this semester's grades to hopefully 3.9)
85th percentile in my class of about 180 kids
I have received all As this year. I was a bit of a slacker freshmen and sophomore years.

APs:
AP Calculus AB
future: AP English 12 and AP gov and possibly AP Physics but it would be an online course :( My school is small so there are only like 5 or 6 AP classes that are even offered.
I hope i can dual enroll next year and take Calc II but idk if i can fit it into my schedule.

My ACT is a 29 but i think i can get at least a 30 my next retake

Extracurriculars:
Varsity hockey 2 years
Varsity tennis (senior year only)
NHS
I also participated in a peer mentoring program where i helped a special needs kid with his classwork for a semester in my civics/economics class while i was a freshmen.
I have worked 2 summers 30-40 hours a week at a bakery making pastries and i will be working a painting job this upcoming summer and during the school year.

If i could get some service hours do you think that would help me out at all?
If i think of anything else ill add it in the comments.
Thank you everybody!

I have taken 2 Years of Spanish aswell, but unfortunately my school doesn’t offer Spanish 3 anymore…

What state are you in and what is your intended major? Imo, your ECs look good, and yes service hours (if you get a significant number of hrs) will help you as well. Your objective stats, however, are a bit short of UMich and UIUC’s averages. Take as many APs as you can since your school does not offer many.

I intend to major in physics or electrical or aerospace engineering. I am a resident of Michigan. I plan to hopefully take 3 APs next year. What would a significant number of volunteer hours be? 50? 100? More?
Would you say I still have a shot at umich?

Also does anyone know what is most important to these schools in their admission process (I.e. GPA, test scores, or essays)?

Aim for 100+ hours. 100 is a Bronze Presidential Service award, and 250 hours is the gold prez. service award. You school counselor should have more info on how you should record your hours and get them approved.
Since you are a MI resident, UMich is a high match/low reach and UIUC is a reach for engineering and low reach for the school of arts and science.

I just got my scores back from my ACT and I scored a 30. Should this up my chances at all or is it sort of insignificant? I don’t think I will be able to earn any service hours due to sports and work so I don’t expect to have any hours when I begin applying.

UMich CoE would be a very high match to low reach for you as in state. Nevertheless, I do see someone got in this year with even lower ACT but for a girl with higher GPA.

Interesting. How about LSA? Could I apply to coe and LSA on my application?
