Doing an MBA from 'Bama, especially without work experience, would not make sense.
Doing a Master’s might.

okay cool that’s good input. So is going to Alabama worth it if my degree gets that qualitative bang for the buck, so to speak, because I accomplish all that in the four years?
@njk1999 ok I’ve read your posts and judging by what you’ve shared my observation is that your heart is with Alabama. You can’t put a value on that feeling of the One. My son felt it when he visited his college; so much so he turned down an OV to UMich. So I say since money isn’t a factor and it’s likely you’re going on to law school later, choose where you’ll be most happiest for your undergrad. You’re in the honors program so that will look good when applying to law school. Undergrad is where you’ll meet your lifelong friends and where you’ll ‘grow up’ the most. All the best to you!!
@CALSmom thank you for the advice!! so sweet
@njk1999, there are some fields (like psychology) where, if you want a decent job in the field, you pretty much have to get a master’s. There are others (like engineering and CS) where a master’s doesn’t get you much more and really only makes sense for those folks who didn’t study the subject in undergrad (math major doing a CS master’s; physics major doing an engineering master’s) or just want a degree from a more prestigious school that opens up more doors.
Short answer: Unless you’re entering a field where a master’s is almost expected (accounting is another; well, they require 150 credit hours), a master’s from 'Bama wouldn’t open more doors than a bachelor’s from UMich, IMO.
@njk1999 you’re welcome!! I didn’t see earlier about the four year MBA option at Bama…that’s a huge plus!! MBA plus JD…wow
P.S. I did my MBA with three years work experience beforehand and a lot of my fellow classmates went straight to MBA program from undergrad. They came from UCLA, Vanderbilt, Hofstra just to name a few…just saying. Plus we all landed great jobs
@CALSmom, you may be dating yourself.
These days, MBA’s without work experience just aren’t very attractive to employers.
You are getting some good advice, and some people wrapped up in representing their schools, but you seem smart enough to pick through the dross. I Idon’t have and any allegiance to either schoo I agree with CALSmom that from your posting on here, your heart seems to be with Bama. I will also add that the weather between the two is noticeably different, and you need to know what you like in a climate…you’ll be spending your next 4 years there, so choose a place you will enjoy.
If you plan to go into academics grad school, your undergraduate degree and who you meet there/what research opportunities you have can matter. If you plan to go to law school, with good grades and LSATS you can get into a good law school from either. And if you head out into the job market with an U/G degree, it really won’t matter where it is from (for-profit universities excepted) after your first job. Networks and affiliations may help you down the line, especially if you stay in-state for one of these two schools, but otherwise it is all about what you do in the real world. I have hired a lot of CS/Engineering professionals, and I would take an Idaho State grad (just picking a state school at random) with relevant experience and a great interview over an MIT grad without those every day.
Let us know what you choose, and how your final decision was made. Your thoughtfulness may help your peers in similar situations.
My daughter had to chose between Alabama and UW-Madison. At Alabama she had the Presidential scholarship so the COA was less than in-state UW. With transportation, etc. it was about even. In the end, she chose UW for a variety of reasons that were mostly idiosyncratic or personal.
As a parent and realizing that UW is ranked higher, I was still rooting for Alabama. I liked the campus, the honors college, the weather, the welcoming attitude toward OOS students. Everybody raves about UW Madison campus but I just don’t get it - yet. WI winters are long periods of frozen hell. When we toured the campus in January it was in the teens and very windy. All the students looked haggard, unshowered in a week, dressed mostly in black as if unconsciously trying to absorb whatever sunlight might hit them, etc. At Alabama they were wearing shorts and T-shirts and seemed happy. As a parent I am not shopping for the Siddhartha experience. Just my 2 cents. UW is a very good school and I am proud she is going there. But Alabama would have been just as good from my standpoint so good luck in your decision. On Wisconsin and roll tide.
@PurpleTitan haha I sure am! But in the OP case the MBA is just icing on the cake as her main goal is to attend law school. And I agree with @NashvilletoTexas about the weather. I know some kids just can’t be in cold weather and months of dreary weather would depress them.
Alabama honors includes priority registration. A freshman honors student chooses classes even before non-honors seniors. This perk cannot be overstated. No problem getting the classes you need, usually with professors and times that you want. What is Michigan’s registration process?
Not really sure! If any mich students or parents would want to chime in that would help a lot @Chardo
Thank you everyone for the great advice! I hear about a Michigan specific scholarship Friday, and if I win that it’s going to be practically impossible to turn down Michigan. I’ll know by the end of the week. Over the last few days especially I’ve seen there really are huge perks to both and I’ll love either one so it’s honestly a toss up in completely different ways. It’s kind of a head and the heart situation that will take much more thinking. I appreciate all the input and I’m glad I’m not the only one defending Alabama anymore in here lol.
@njk1999 Are you hoping you get the scholarship at Michigan? Be honest with yourself. If you’re genuinely hoping that you don’t get the scholarship, I’d say go with Bama. It’s like the old coin flip test.
That’s righ njk1999…be honest with yourself. If you get that scholarship to Michigan, it seems that you’ll be getting close to a free ride at a preeminent university.
Southern Greek life, especially Alabama greek life, is all about being flashy, wealthy, preppy, and good looking. It’s tenfold when you’re in a sorority. If you don’t want that environment, take your talents elsewhere.
@CaliCash I get that but I know quite a few girls that aren’t like that that still participate in Greek life because it’s just so huge there you get over a third of the campus involved not just the most wealthy or flashy, at least in my observation
Alabama greek life is more wealthy and flashy than anything Michigan has to offer. It’s a totally different culture, just know that.
Not sure if this factors into your decision, but Michigan is a VERY liberal university/town. We live in MI and our son didn’t even apply there. He thought Greek Row was disgusting and the liberalness (always in our local news) drove him away. He’s looking forward to Bama in the Fall :).
