My parents are making me decide between Penn State and University of Michigan because they want me to go to Michigan as my family is moving from New Jersey to Michigan. Which college do you think is better and why?

I have been accepted into Rutgers University, Boston University, University of Maryland, Drexel University, University of Connecticut and my top pick is Penn State.

I am planning to study Biomedical Engineering, which is the same thing as Bioengineering.

Undergraduate Rankings

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor = 8
Boston University = 9
Rutgers University = 60

Graduate Rankings

University of Michigan-Ann Arbor = 10
Boston University = 7
Penn State = 23
Drexel University = 30
Rutgers University = 30

If your family is moving to Michigan, you will have in-state privileges sooner or later. In-state at Michigan is the best deal among your list of universities, especially if you are interested in engineering.

Wait...Michigan is not on your list of admitted schools. Are you admitted already?

Just curious. Why is Penn State your top choice?

Money is not an issue, but i want to choose a college where i will get a great education, which is what my dad wants the most and i will feel comfortable in. My dad wants me to go to Michigan because he can keep an eye on me as he will live only an hour away from the campus. I don't want him that close, which is the problem i'm facing.

Campus wise and socially, which do you fell is the better college.

I have not been admitted to the college yet, because i didn't know that i was moving to michigan until middle of january so i applied pretty late, but i want to make my decision so i don't have to wait after i get my probable acceptance.

I feel that Penn State is just away from my parents, big campus in nice weather by a mix of sun and snow, cleaner than michigan campus, no cars allowed on most parts of campus for safer walking, need to have a college with a good sports team because i'm really into sports, i didn't like the michigan dorms when i visited it on tuesday compared to the dorms i visited in Penn State, didn't like the format of how the beds are on top of the desks in michigan

Perhaps you should read the post more carefully again before posting your opinion. I've never heard of the Ivy League trumping the Big 10 in sports.

bahha ok guys he's talking about PENN STATE not UPENN (Ivy).

Unless you got into the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, I would say go to Michigan because overall, Michigan is a much better school that Penn State. However, if you got into Penn State Honors, then that's a different story.

Mensa, Penn does not trump Michigan. Only ignorant people would assume that simply because it is an Ivy League, it would trump Michigan. Check out their peer assessment scores and get back to me.

guys, let's not stray away from the main issue at hand, which is PENN STATE versus Michigan. let's leave Penn out of this thread since it is irrelevant to whatittakes.

How is Michigan a probable acceptance for you? Your 1210 SAT is well below the mean for accepted students and your GPA is as well. I'm not saying you are unqualified, but I think it is a bit presumptuous to call Michigan a probably acceptance, as it is a pretty damn competitive school for out of staters, especially if you apply very late in the game.

I was accepted to UMich OOS (1440 SAT, ~4.0 GPA). I love everything about the school. If I was lucky enough to get instate tuition there (like you eventually will), I would go without thinking twice. Right now, I'm praying for enough scholarships.

Wharton and Ross are really close into rankings, prestiege and just overall, anywhere you can get into Wharton, there's like a 95% chance you can get into Ross.

If you're looking for the best of the best, Wharton is, you know, the best. But Ross isn't exactly woahmygawd far behind.

It's like comparing a BMW and a Mercedes... BMW > Mercedes :D
