University of Michigan vs. UW Madison

I've been accepted to both UW and UM, and am currently stuck between which to attend. I am looking to pursue political science, spanish, and economics. I'm also looking to not leave college with 100 grand in debt, since It's my intention to go onto grad school later in my life. Why should I attend one university over the other, what does each have to offer?

Per your comments…If either college will leave you with that kind of debt, then neither is right for you.

^What rjk said.

Are you in-state at either college? If so, go there.

not in state at either place, from new york. Wisco is 13k/year less than Mich is.

You didn’t mention it but may you have an interest in Ross (as opposed to Econ)? If so, that may be worth the price difference due to the stupendous placement and opportunities

Well, then you have $13K (that will grow to $52K) on UW’s side for pros. If you can get another $10K out of UW, doubt you’ll get anything out of UM, then it could really tip the balance. You do realize that for $20K a year you can go to SUNY Buffalo. With the cheap student digs where so many live after freshman year, You can probably do the whole thing for $75K there, all 4 years. Maybe $70K as you probably can get some merit money.

First lesson in economics here on the College Confidential HOuse.

Seriously, Buffalo is a great under rated gem of a school, and I say this after looking at it with adverse prejudice.

I’d have a hard time believing the overall life at SUNYBuff would come close to matching UW or UM. Maybe if you have no interest in sports or a national student body.

I just had a flashback…Hawkette, is that you? Haha!

yeah, it’s so out of character for barrons. I thougnt we would hear about how many NAS and NAE members SUNY-Buffalo has on its faculty, compared to Wisconsin and Michigan. Btw, Buffalo has exactly one each.

I always thought there is much more to college than stats. Usually we are talking about schools that are closer in the non-academic aspects–say Uva vs UNC or the like. In this case not so much. I think there is a significant qualitative difference. .
