My son was just put on the wait list for the University of Michigan. What are his chances of getting in?
According to UMich’s college data, 36 people were admitted from around 4000 people who accepted the waitlist spot. I would expect the acceptance rate from waitlist to be around 1%.
Here are the waitlist stats for previous two years: Fall 2017, and Fall 2016

10% (yes, 10%) in 2017-2018 (11,094 - offered, 4109 - accepted to be on waitlist, 468 - admitted).
1% in 2016-2017 (11,197 - offered, 3970 - accepted to be on waitlist, 36 - admitted).
Hope this helps. Son is waitlisted as well.
^^^ If you are scratching your head about the jump in the percentages - you are not alone. I am sure we will be able to find some explanation on google somewhere. Good luck.
FWIW I checked the previous few more years and the waitlist yield is around 1-2%. So, I would say the Fall 2017 number of 10% seems like an anomaly (or a new norm - idk).
They also enrolled roughly 600 more kids into school in 2017. Oh well…
Thank you.
Thank you!
It all depends on the actual admission number and the yield. They had plan to make use of the wait list more to avoid over enrollment problem in 2014. It did not really happen until last year as the yield rate keep going up. In any case, the WL admission rate will still fluctuate a lot year to year.
