University of Michigan Waitlist 2024

Please share the stats who got off of the waitlist if possible.

@dep123 there was already an article linked on this thread stating how the university is losing a lot of money- accepting more OOS kids will help that… also with other state schools that generally accept more in-state kids, like UVA, have already came out and directly said that they have seen an increase in in-state kids committing to the school- so i hate to break it to you but clearly corona will impact this for students as well as the admissions board

@dep123 also the university has to have a certain number of Michigan residents in their school. The waitlist is not going to fluctuate numbers dramatically so I don’t really think it’s a disadvantage to in-state kids I think you have the same chance. I just think that OOS kids have a better chance compared to previous years- still lower than in-states like you tho. Good luck.

dear Michigan, please accept me

accept me as well plsz

does anyone know how many people have been accepted so far? Someone on the ucla waitlist thread said that umich accepted around 1000 people, so if that’s the case …

Yeah I read that too…I don’t think it is true

Someone wrote that on the UCLA appeals thread too

Ask yourself how they would know if the numbers haven’t been released yet?

Accept me too ?

i think 1000 is a big exaggeration just because there couldn’t have been 1000 spots to give already last week

yeah probably maybe it’s around like 200-300?

All we know at this stage is it seems schools are going earlier to the waitlist compared to prior years.

Nothing spectacular here. OOS.

Class Rank: School does not rank
GPA: 3.86 UW/4.12 W (including first semester senior year)
ACT: 32 (E35, R34, M30, S30)
Lots of ECs and also a blip in my GPA my soph year because of an accident (missed three months of school and had to make up all of my first semester work and take all of my second semester classes at the same time).

I think all that we know for certain is that UMich is dealing with a lot of uncertainty. I would refer you to The Michigan Daily’s interview of President Schlissel on April 29: https://www.michigandaily.com/section/administration/schlissel-interview-1 .

I have excerpted a particularly relevant question and President Schlissel’s revealing response below:

TMD: Many community members anticipate lower enrollment numbers if the University ends up in an online or weird fall semester. What financial fallout could ensue with that lost tuition revenue and how would that impact faculty and staff layoffs?

MS: We’re very tuition dependent. The state of Michigan only provides maybe 15 percent of our general fund support. About 70 percent comes from you and your families and the tens of thousands of other students. So we’re dependent on tuition for everything. If there’s no tuition, then there are no faculty, there are no staff, there’s no one to keep the lights on. There’s no way around that. Enrollment for the fall remains uncertain. Right now we’re waiting to hear from students, the new incoming class that we put out offers to. The sub-population of our community that has been affected the most are our international students, where there’s great uncertainty about safety of travel, about visas, from some parts of the world. So we’re predicting that there’ll be a moderate to significant decrease, at least temporarily, in our international student population and they’re really important members of our community…We’re going to be living with this virus in society for a few years more, at least at different levels, so enrollment is uncertain.

President Schlissel was on CNBC about a half-hour ago. The interview is worth watching. He made a couple of interesting points:

  1. He estimates that enrollment of international students will be down about 25%
  2. UM admitted 5% more students this year than it typically does.

I would encourage you to watch to the interview. Here is the link: https://www.cnbc.com/video/2020/05/04/university-of-michigan-president-on-covid-19-financial-impact-admissions.html

what does this mean for the oos waitlist? are intl and oos in a similar pool?

Was hoping the president would answer the question about the number of waitlist admit. Anyway I hope miracles will happen

I think I also heard in that interview that large lecture classes may/will be online and the smaller discussion and labs will be held in-person with measures taken for Covid-19.

So it seems they sent out about 350 more offers then usual. They know this is a down year. They know not all will attend. They will know next week with more detail what’s going on.
