University of Minnesota Twin Cities, or Tulane University ? Which one is better for an international experience in Business.

I study business in Brazil, and I have the opportunity to go to one of these two colleges. However, I dont know which one is better for me. I am looking for a college that has a good reputation, and I am looking for a good place to live in my six months stay. I know that Tulane is well-known for their constant parties, but I dont know if this will jeopardize my learning experience in comparison with the opportunities in Minnesota.
About University of Minnesota, I know that it has a huge campus, and a really nice city, but I dont know if it is a good business school.

With all due respect, I think you are approaching this the wrong way as an undergrad. Grad school, these questions would make more sense, but either school will give you an excellent undergraduate education in business (or any other subject for that matter). The main issue as I see it is that these are about as opposite environments as they can be. Size, location, public vs. private, sports, etc. BTW, all schools have constant parties. Don’t let Tulane’s reputation based on being in New Orleans fool you.

Having said all that, I will point out that Tulane is considered one of the top schools for Latin American studies and does have extremely long standing ties to Brazil and other Latin American countries. That might help present you with some unique opportunities, although with some effort I am sure you could find similar ones at Minnesota. But it might be easier in that sense at Tulane.

OK, I just typed all that and now I see you say it is just a six month stay. I will leave what I typed since it might be useful, but it sounds like you are in some kind of a study abroad program. Would that be correct? If so, I would say pick the one that you think will present you with the most networking ties for later. My guess is that is Tulane, but I cannot be very certain of that.

Compare the temperature of the cities for the 6 month period in which you will be there. Go to the place where you need not buy a whole new wardrobe.

At Tulane, I’m not sure that the party reputation matches the reality for many or even most students. You might look through the threads for the last couple of years on this.

Tulane will have smaller classes and probably a tighter-knit community.

Vitrac, sorry to disagree with you, but I think the best reason to pick U of MN would be to experience snow.

Do you mean the Carslon school of Business? If so , yes it is tops. However, I live in the Twin cities and I personally do not like the layout of the U Of M. It is huge and spread all over the place. The weather is whole other topic and when it gets to 20 below zero you STILL will have class! Last nite we had a high in the upper 30’s and it is just October. The weather will affect your whole life if you are not used a cold climate. Also - the partying at the U of M…same or worse than Tulane.
I have a son who is a sophomore at Tulane. I vote Tulane!

There are many ways to experience snow but going to MN in the dead of winter would not be one of them for me. LOL…
Both have good business school. Weather wise, I would say if majority of the 6 months will be in winter, then I would choose Tulane. If, on the other hand, the majority of the 6 months is in summer, then I would choose UMN. In reality, it might just be one semester that covers both winter and summer. Since Tulane’s academic schedule avoids the most brutal part of the summer (later May, June, July and more than half Aug), I would choose Tulane.

True, Stonebridge. The only really hot weather at Tulane (most years) is the first 5 weeks of classes (through the end of September) and the last few weeks of the spring semester (late April through finals). At least what I considered really hot and humid. Some have a lower tolerance for heat and humidity.

Hey Everyone! Thanks for the replies! They were very helpfull.

Just let me give you some more infos: I am going in the summer, so I think I won’t live the snow experience in Minnesota.
I decided to go to US because I wanted to experience the culture of america, the Entrepreneur spirit, and other stuffs that only US have. Having that in mind, I would like to choose a school that could give me that culture experience. Here in Brazil, the undergrad college where you went is very important for your professional experience. That’s why I am a little bit worried about the reputation that each school have.

Besides, I am a little afraid of the size of UofM. I think it will be harder to fit in.

That information helps a lot to make your decision, actually. Tulane is very well known as one of the leading b-schools for entrepreneurial studies or whatever you want to call it.

LOL, no problem. Like I said earlier, hot at first, but cools off after a few weeks to very nice weather. Based on all you have said, Tulane seems your best choice.

Personally, I think you would have a great experience at Tulane in New Orleans (nothing against Minnesota) but it such a great culture and if you had to pick between the two cities, New Orleans definitely wins. I am friends with several exchange students from various places this semester and they absolutely love New Orleans. I would not say that partying is a major issue at all, the reputation Tulane has about partying is really not representative of the entire school. The business school here is great as well
