Hi everyone! My name is Paige and I’m a freshman at the University of North Texas in Denton, TX, and I figured this would be a good place to discuss my experience as a National Merit Scholar, especially since I didn’t find a lot of information about UNT’s NMF package when I was college searching as a senior.
If you or your student are a potential NMF, you can email the UNT National Merit staff with a request for an informational packet and in it, they will send you a form for a free t-shirt (as of 2018). They can also arrange a “VIP” tour for you where you get to have lunch with the president, take a private tour, set up meetings with departments of your choice, and get a bunch of free stuff in the process.
UNT Meritorious Scholarship Details:
- Full tuition and fees (up to 15 credit hours)
- Room and board (standard hall/double occupancy)
- 7-Day Basic Meal Plan ($240 in flex each semester and unlimited dining hall meals)
- Around $5000 per semester stipend (this amount can vary; if you choose to live off-campus/cheaper dorm, choose a cheaper meal plan, or take less than 15 credit hours, the difference will be added to your stipend)
Other Perks:
- Automatic admission into the Honors College which comes w/ early class registration
- Application fee waived
- Orientation fee waived for student & one parent
- Upperclassmen parking privileges
- Networking dinners
- Recognition during football game on Family Weekend
- And more to come (next semester there will be a National Merit Network organization formed)
I’m really glad that I chose UNT as my university. Their financial aid package is one of, if not the, best out there for National Merit Scholars and this scholarship was and still is a huge weight lifted off my shoulders. I’m an International Studies major and I really have enjoyed my classes and professors (both in my major and within the Honors College). UNT has many opportunities for research, study abroad, & extracurricular involvement as well.
I would be glad to answer any questions about UNT or my experience, feel free to message me!
