This year, the University of Notre Dame, like most selective schools, received a record number of applications (20,370 applicants) and had it’s lowest-ever acceptance rate at 17.6% (3,586 admits / 20,370 apps). The acceptance rate will likely bump up to about 18% when the usual 50-100 students come off the waitlist as ND manages its yield after the May 1 enrollment confirmation deadline for the students already accepted in the REA and RD cycles.
Link to the story in ND’s student newspaper, The Observer:
Going to admitted student days April 22-23. Not sure what to expect. My DS is deciding between ND and UCLA. Net cost right now is close. Travel will be a significant factor. How challenging is it for students to get to and from Chicago for less expensive flights?
@usma87 Not challenging at all: there is direct bus service from Notre Dame campus to both the Chicago O’Hare and Midway airport: https://www.airportsupersaver.com/
There are extra Express Buses for Notre Dame Students an travel days both to and from both airports.
Flight connections from South Bend Airport (SBN) are pretty good as well.
Airport buses to Chicago leave right from the bookstore on the ND campus. Could not be easier. Taking a direct flight from Chicago will almost always be faster and cheaper than taking a connecting flight from South Bend airport. Also tons of ND students are from Chicago-land for ride sharing.
Also, Midway is much better to use than O’Hare. About 25 miles closer, usually better traffic conditions, and Southwest service. Which is nice for college kids – low fares, no change fees, two free 50 pound bags checked.
@appalachymom There is no transport from campus to South Bend train that I know of. But should be very easy to get there with Uber. Students use ubers a lot to travel in the area.
“By train - The South Shore Line trains run directly from the Chicago Loop (corner of Michigan and Randolph) to South Bend Regional Airport (about a two-hour trip). A one-way fare is $13.00. From the airport, the Notre Dame campus is approximately a 15-minute ride by rental car or taxi. For more information, visit nictd.com.”
Also, here’s some feedback about the bus I gave to another poster in a different thread that you might find useful -
The bus is very easy. Ejcclc is correct, it picks up and drops off on campus next to the bookstore. You can buy tickets in advance and get them texted to your phone, but not for a particular departure time. Buses leave every 2 hours (I believe) so you just have to stand on line to get on the bus you want. They have more than one bus per time slot if necessary. Also, often times students will talk to their friends or other students in their dorm and arrange to share Ubers with people who are arriving or leaving around the same time. When my daughter just flew back from spring break she shared an uber from O’Hare to ND with one of her friends and 2 students that girl knew. It cost each person $35. When she flew into South Bend from Easter weekend (lots of kids stay on campus), she shared a cab from the airport with 2 other ND students she didn’t even know. That airport is only 10-15 min away from campus.
@appalachymom Yes, the south bend train station is also only 10-15 min from campus, like the airport. So it will be a cheap uber/cab ride. Not sure how much your child currently uses Uber, but make sure they know that they are able to order one in advance, for a specific pick up time, if needed. And they can “drop a pin” for their exact pick up spot. A lot of kids get picked up either at the “circle” on campus, or in front of the Morris Inn. Except if they happen to live in one of the dorms near a road (Lyons, Morrisey, Howard, Ryan, etc), they can get picked up at their dorm.
I havent gotten my financial aid package yet and I called and they said that they are working on them and that they are released daily. Shouldn’t I have it by now? It’s been like two weeks since the acceptance
@jpmantica Hang in there! For us, at least, it was definitely worth the wait, so I know they took a good hard look at our entire financial situation. Hope you hear good news soon!
Following yesterday’s National College Decision Day, congratulations to all ND RD applicants wo accepted their Admission Offer to the Class of 2022! It would not be surprising to see Notre Dame’s yield rate to hit a new record high this year.
@hpcsa Your prediction about the yield rate is going to be accurate. Reports from the waitlist thread indicate that only 20 were accepted, and the waitlist has been closed. Congrats to all in the Class of 2022!
@hafamama If indeed only 20 people were accepted off the waitlist this year, that would mean the acceptance rate for ND’s incoming “class of 2022” will end up being 17.7% (all time low) and the yield rate will be almost 57% (up from the 55.4% last year).
It’s not much of a surprise, as this was a very competitive year for college admissions across the board, and ND was no exception. Congrats to all who got accepted this year. I hope to be in your shoes next year.
@GeronimoAlpaca Best of luck and success to you next year, and thank you for the very good analytical support based on statistical information this year!
@hpcsa Thanks a lot. Ever since I saw ND’s stat ranges as a soph, I realized how competitive it is. Big ups to you for getting in and hope you have a great experience this fall. Go Irish!
Interesting admissions update (video & story) that was posted by a local South Bend TV station about the incoming Notre Dame Class of 2022. Man, congrats to those of you who got in this year!
