University of Notre Dame to cover some murals

The murals, painted in the 1880s, had been controversial due to how they depicted Native Americans and African Americans.

I heard about this. I think it is great they did this, however, some are still unhappy that they simply covered them vs. removing them, with the option of being able to display again. Many feel they should have destroyed them permanently. I have mixed feelings about that.

They should be viewed within the context of history and presented that way. Or they should be moved to the museum on campus (if that is possible). We need to learn from these pieces of art and prevent anything like it from being repeated.
