Looking for advice on which college to pick for public health related major. Daughter has some great options but is narrowing it down to these final two.
There’s no right or wrong. What’s the budget? How’s her tolerance to rain and seasonal affective disorder? How important are athletics? The sun? The beach?
P.S. We’re from OR and out son is a Cal Poly alum, so we know both well.
Due to a nice scholarship to Oregon and in state at Poly both are within budget. She knows weather will be wetter in Oregon. As a California girls she is used to the sun…lol… so I don’t know if the grey weather will effect her. I know Oregon honors college keeps classes small which is nice. However, Cal Poly SLO’s hands on style teaching is a plus… Any idea how big the GE classes are at Poly?
Check the Honors curriculum. Typically a small portion of classes are required. So you’ll still have the regular ones too. Oregon requires a foreign language.
Sounds like a great pool to choose from. Good luck.
Small. I can’t speak for all classes, but for example Calculus is capped at 35 and Physics, 42. Essentially honors colleges are trying to replicate what everyone gets at Cal Poly, small classes where labs and discussions aren’t taught by TAs.
The largest lecture hall on campus is The Silo in the B-School. It holds 205. My son had one class in there, an engineering class that nearly all engineers take.
The honors college at Oregon will be good. The Honors College at Orgon State was one of the best we came across. I expect U of O to be similar. Not all classes will qualify though. It’s something to look into.
Eugene is a great town, not dissimilar to SLO in temperament. The biggest differences will be weather and athletics.
She should visit. They are both great options. One will speak to her.
Congrats!
Thank you so much for your response. She has been to U of O twice. As a Stamps Scholar semi finalist they really made an impression on her when we went up for an interview. She loved the campus. We will take her back to SLO over spring break to do an official tour and get the “vibe”…lol. She has been there but we just walked around unofficially. Was it hard to get classes at SLO? I know at the honors college you get priority registration.
Thank you! Yes it is 1/3 honors, 1/3 regular ones, 1/3 major I believe.
There generally aren’t problems as long as students don’t dodge times. My son was ahead, so in his 3rd year he couldn’t get a class because it was filled by graduating seniors. He took a graduate class instead and picked it up next term.
Honors at SLO does get priority registration, but his seniority put him ahead anyway. He had so many APs that choosing honors would have added 10 non-technical hours to his already 200 hour curriculum. So, he declined the invite. He did all honors math though which was also by invite, but without any other requirements.
