*** University of Pennsylvania Class of 2015 Official RD Decisions Thread ***

rejected:

The Admissions Selection Committee reviewed all aspects of your application, both academic and extracurricular. After careful consideration, we are not able to offer you admission to the University of Pennsylvania`s Class of 2015. The committee members appreciate the efforts made by you and those who have supported you in this process, and we recognize the hard work and individual success reflected in your application.

This year, Penn received the largest number of applications in our long history, students with exciting accomplishments and promising futures. The majority of our applicants are qualified to successfully pursue the rigorous program of study at Penn. However, because of the large number of outstanding applicants, our committee can admit only a small percentage of those students seeking admission.

On behalf of the entire Admissions Selection Committee, I thank you for your interest in Penn and wish you all the best as you pursue your educational goals.

Sincerely,

Writing (Write a brief description and Rate Quality on 1-10 Scale; 10 as Best):[ul]
[] Essays (Include Subjects):
[li] Common App: Rubik’s cube & how it impacted my personality and way I approach and solve problems; original & creative; 10+[/li][] Supplement (Why Penn?): Unique biophysics major program, want to truly master the subject after seeing it used in research, continue studying and playing jazz, try out Quidditch (LOL), and form Rubik’s cube club at Penn.
[] Other:[/ul]
[li] Teacher Recommendation #1: 5 pages. SHE LOVES ME. from AP Bio teacher <3. basically tells almost everything about me through my activities (likes and dislikes, sense of humor, maturity (O_O), etc.) 10+[/li][] Teacher Recommendation #2: 1 page. AP World teacher, like a mom to me. Rec is pretty run-of-the-mill, though. 7?
[] Counselor Rec: Saw afterwards, sort of a laundry list. 5
[] Additional Rec: Wrote it myself and got AP English teacher to sign it. Attests to outstanding writing talent and insight to reading literature (mostly true). 9
[] Interview: The Korean girl was really nice and friendly hahas. Said she’d write me a great rec
[] Art Supplement:
NO. there are more than enough people out there more talented than I am at violin, piano, and alto sax, combined. I am in jazz band though :)

Other[ul]
[] Date Submitted App: 3-4 days before deadline? O_O
[] State (if domestic applicant): NY (NEW YORK CITY HOLLAHHH!)
[] Country (if international applicant):
[] School Type: LARGE PUBLIC (4000+ students)
[] Ethnicity: Asian (■■■)
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: not important here.
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.):[/ul]
Rubik’s cube - 15 second solves; sent a video of a 13.76-sec solve on a CD with my counselor’s rec and transcript and such. Hope they had fun with it  Great essay writing (?) I’ve been told I have a way with words, apparently HAHAHAS.

Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: grades (spanish aside), rank, SAT IIs (I BEASTED ALL OF THEM YO!), Rubik’s cube! >:) MUAHAHAHA
[] Weaknesses: Asian, public school isn’t magnet or specialized (quite the opposite actually…), but doesn’t downright suck, either. It’s pretty moderate in terms of grades and smartness of people in general.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rubik’s cube? O_O I don’t know how many applicants have sub-15 averages -shrugs- SAT II grades were definitely a plus (haven’t seen another CCer with 5 800s yet :p)
[] What would you have done differently?:[/ul]
not much, really. maybe I should’ve paid more attention in my Spanish classes so my grades wouldn’t have been too terrible there HAHAHAS. might’ve gotten valedictorian too LOL :p

Other Factors:
General Comments/Congratulations/Venting/Commiserations, etc:
YAY! 4 Ivies and counting! (Princeton, Yale, UPenn, Cornell) got WL to Brown though ahhahas O_O
CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE WHO GOT ACCEPTED! to the WLs and Rs - IT’S OKAY!

Decision: Accepted CAS

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2220 superscore (730 CR, 710 M, 780 W)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: 770 Literature, 680 U.S. History
[] GPA (out of 4.0): 4.81 W, although I’m pretty sure my school just adds on a point if you’re in the honors curriculum. So let’s just say 3.81 UW.
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%, not ranked
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A (school is very limited in pre-senior year APs)
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP British Lit, AP Spanish, AP Physics, AP Calc AB, AP U.S. History, Religion.
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): National Hispanic Scholar, National Merit (Commended) Not major, but won first place at a statewide poetry recital for Latin.
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Not TERRIBLE I guess, but nowhere near up to par. President of Italian Club (2 years), Student mentor (2 years), physics league (1 year), math league (4 years), academic challenge team (1 year)…a few others I can’t think of right now.
[] Job/Work Experience: N/A. Worked as a cashier for four days once. I am lazy beyond belief.
[] Volunteer/Community service: 100+ hours between a local animal shelter and ushering at a theater.
[] Summer Activities: Nothing substantial – took a modern European history course at a local college one summer, came out with an A-.
[] Essays: My Why Penn essay was kind of generic but solid, I suppose – and I really liked my common app essay!
[] Teacher Recommendation: The first one was all-around nice – we have a sweet little bond. Nothing amazing, but definitely worked to my advantage. Also mentioned the research paper I wrote on jazz in Nazi Germany, so it helped tie into the whole “HISTORY IS MY LIIIIIIFE” thing. Didn’t read the second one.
[] Counselor Rec: Didn’t read, but she really likes me and seems to have a feel for what makes me tick. A very kind woman, too, so I’m assuming it was pretty nice!

[] Additional Rec: N/A
[] Interview: One my best; she was serious but laid-back at the same time, and was very receptive to what I had to say.

[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): URM, first generation
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: My writing is very strong, I think – and if we’re being realistic, my ethnicity helped a lot, too.
[] Weaknesses: I guess my SAT scores were “weak”? I thought they were fine, I don’t think you should worry about those too much as long as you clear 2000. What really, really bothered me was my lack of substantial ECs. Take leadership roles, kids.
[] Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I HAVEN’T THE SLIGHTEST.

Comments:
so it goes… no upenn for me…

waitlisted. they asked me to inform them of all the other schools i applied to and what their admission decision was. Why would I provide that information and what would they do with it? I dont want other schools decisions to play any role in Penn’s final decision regarding me. For example, if i also was denied at other ivy’s ; i dont want that used against me.

Please let me know your thoughts and thanks

I got in. !!!

I’m going to go cry out of happiness now.

OMG WHARTON 2015!! Will post stats later!

rejected, but hey, it was a major reach.

31 ACT, 3.66/4.0, white female from ny

congrats to all of you who made it in (or made the waitlist). I’m envious.
the only thing I’d do over is work harder in school, my gpa just wasn’t good enough and that kills me.

but I have 9 other amazing schools to choose from, I’ll be fine. good luck to all of you.

(and don’t feel bad if you’re rejected. my friend with a 4.9/5 GPA and over a 2200 SAT was deferred ED (she’s a legacy with tons of great extracarics and high interest) and she just got rejected today as well. the process is crazy!)

@inycepoo nicee  putting rubiks cube on your app is a great idea. Penspinning is definitely going on mine ;)

despite the fact that i did not actually turn my application in to Penn, I was accepted. while I was rejected from Columbia, where i did actually apply… hm…

Anyone know anything about the integrated studies program?

Integrated Studies is a new program this year - you live in Riepe College House and half of your first year schedule is taking Integrated Studies 001 and 002 - it’s really for people who like the breadth of the liberal arts. All single-degree college of arts and sciences admits are eligible to apply. You find out in June when housing assignments are released since its both an academic and residential community

UScholars invitation anyone?

Decision: Waitlisted

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2120; CR: 670, W: 740, M: 710
[] ACT: 32 (not sent, though ><)
[] SAT II: Bio-M: 690, Math-II: 740
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): school is weird and does it on a 100 scale, but in the very high 90s
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1 / 273
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): =P none yet.
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): —
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Calc AB, AP Lit, AP Spanish, AP Am Gov, Chem II, Band, Independant Study (Computer Science)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): few little local awards, school award in Chemistry, National Merit Commended
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Marching Band (Secretary, Sax Section Leader), Saxtet (Group Leader), Spanish Honor Society (Founder, President), Musical - Stage/Sound Crew, National Honor Society, Scholastic Scrimmage Team, Girl Scouts
[] Job/Work Experience: =P none
[] Volunteer/Community service: 30 hrs past five summers at Musikfest, Program Assistant one summer (40 hrs) at Girl Scout Day Camp
[] Summer Activities: ^
[] Essays: ironically insightful tongue-in-cheek essay about how marching band members at my school don’t get varsity jackets
[] Teacher Recommendation: One fantastic one from my Spanish teacher, dunno about the others
[] Counselor Rec: ? Good I guesss?
[] Additional Rec: —
[] Interview: none requested
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] Applied for Financial Aid?: yes
[] Intended Major: Computer Science
[] State (if domestic applicant): PA
[] School Type: Public (and mediocre in quality)
[] Ethnicity: Filipina/White
[] Gender: F
[] Income Bracket: ~100k
[] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): female going into CS … erm…
[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Personality (I hope, lmao), starting a club, being generally well-rounded, being from PA (actually, I don’t know if that helps at all)
[] Weaknesses: Test scores, absolute lack of AP scores, no real work experience, no real awards, not being superhuman
[li] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I really don’t know. I look at some of these rejected stats and wonder how I got waitlisted over them… and you all must be really fantastic people. I wonder if I would be considered “well-rounded,” or just “hard-working,” pushing the limits to what is available to me (especially coming from my school, who has pretty much had only one person accepted to an ivy in the last 50 years of its existence).[/li]Actually, it probably had a lot to do with luck.
[/ul]General Comments:
Accepted to: Lafayette, Bucknell, Case Western, RPI, Drexel, Penn State - Main
And by the scholarship I have and the terrible financial aid packages I’ve been getting, I’m probably going to Drexel. See. That’s how much I love Philadelphia. xD But alsobecauseI’minlovewithit.
Hey, congrats to everyone: accepted, waitlisted, and rejected! It’s seriously not the end of the world. If you were ambitious enough to apply to UPenn, you’re set to have a fruitful road ahead of you, regardless of what college you choose to attend!

[] Summer Activities: Local tv station intern summer 2009
[] Essays: I thought it was strictly okay, but I guess it was pretty good. I liked my common app one better though.

[] Additional Rec: n/a
[] Interview: it was about 20 - 30 minutes. (i’m not one to ask a lot of questions) and the guy was nice. It went smoothly

[] Applied for Financial Aid?: psh as if that wasn’t a must
[] Intended Major: it might be art and cinema studies
[] State (if domestic applicant): FL

[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I really don’t even know, but I’m gonna guess it was because I’m an IB student
[/ul]General Comments: I am honestly shocked and honored that I got in to UPenn. Reading these boards gives people like me no form of hope of getting in anywhere, but it’s a lot more exciting finding out that I got in. I don’t think I would go though since I have every intent to go into the film industry.

Decision: Accepted

Objective:[ul]

[] Job/Work Experience: Tutoring for 6 years.
[] Volunteer/Community service: Volunteering with organizations for blind children.
[] Summer Activities: Uhh reading and chilling out? haha.
[] Essays: Common App wrote about MUN, Penn really focused on their programs and opportunities for undergrads.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One was really, really good. Basically, in my teacher’s words, the only thing he didn’t mention was the fact that he wanted to adopt me. He was my MUN advisor and we traveled together, etc. He was also my 10th grade History teacher. The other reccomendation was ok, but a bit stiff. The teacher who wrote it isn’t a native English speaker.
[] Counselor Rec: IDK?

[/ul]Reflection[ul]
[] Strengths: Scores, Why Penn essay, reccomendations.
[] Weaknesses: Courseload.
[] Why you think you were accepted/deferred/denied: I feel my personality really showed through my application. I was really sincere when talking about Penn and why I originally didn’t want to go there, but slowly realized what an amazing school it was. Honestly, UPenn was my first or second choice and it showed.

  7. Accounting
Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): First Class Honours for Grade 9 piano, Live Green Toronto Youth Award, UofWaterloo Avogardro’s chem exam 97th percentile

Subjective:
Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  • Environment club (president)
  • Students of Toronto for Environmental Progress (chair)
  • 4-H provincial greenbelt youth forum
  • Mentorship program at the University of Toronto, French program
  • Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award (met Marc Keilburger at the awards ceremony, featured in the newspaper for this award)
  • Leadership camp at my school (organizer)
  • Piano (stopped after grade 9)
  • Varsity soccer (made it to the provincial tournament last year)
  • FIRST robotics
    Job/Work Experience:
  • Summerhill group, they’re a national environmental organization (team lead, youngest employee)
    Volunteer/Community service:
  • Library, Senior home, March Break camp
    Summer Activities:
  • I did a French immersion program last summer and worked a job
  • I went to summer school the summer before that
    Essays:
  • The common app essay was about my work experience at Summerhill. I talked about how I can express my passion for protecting the environment by engaging in grassroots environmental campaigns. I also talked about how I learned to deal with customers and team members.
  • For the Penn essay, I imagined a day in my life as a Penn student. I researched which frat I would join, my extracurricular activities, research, academics etc. I hoped this showed interest in Penn
  • For the M&T essay, I talked about the Robotics club. Obviously, this activity is very technical by nature. But we also had to raise $20,000 for each competition, and that was the business side. I also had a snow shoveling business back in middle school to raise money for the robotics competitions.
    Teacher Recommendation: They were average.
Counselor Rec: She was new to my school and didn’t know me well. Average.
Additional Rec: One of the facilitators of the Toronto youth environment council wrote a really nice letter about my environmental leadership.
Interview: It was ok. My interviewer didn’t dislike me.

Other
State (if domestic applicant):
Country (if international applicant): GTA, Canada
School Type: Large suburban public school
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: 100,000 +
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): none

Reflection
Strengths: Nothing at all in particular. I just noticed that nobody who applies is an environmentalist like me. Global warming is one of the most pressing issues of this century!
Weaknesses: Poor SAT writing score, not enough awards, asian, not enough APs,
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I’m pretty mediocre.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected at Yale, Princeton, and Harvard. I got into a bunch of “good” Canadian schools that nobody cares about.
General Comments:
I was actually really hoping on UPenn, even though I knew that my chances weren’t that great. I’m actually pretty sad and shocked that I got rejected, but I know that success in life comes from the ability to bounce back from your failures. Oh well, I still had Canadian schools for backup. I just really want to go to Wall Street and work in an investment bank, and while getting rejected from Penn is a setback, I can still make it.
