Hi, I wanted to see who has received merit scholarships from Pitt already and how much they were for - I got into Pitt and University at Buffalo already, and am waiting to hear from UConn. I was invited to the honors program at Pitt. I got a 33 on the ACT, 5’s on 4 AP’s so far (I am taking 7 AP exams for 5 courses this year) and have an UW GPA of 97.192, ranked 9/366 kids with a ton of EC’s and CS. What are my chances?
I recieved $5000 from UB already (I’m a NY resident so it’s already instate tuition), but I met with an honors advisor at UB and she is confident I have a good shot at getting a full ride to UB, so I applied for that already. Unfortunately, Pitt is my first choice, since it has a better medical program and I loved the campus.
It’d be great to hear what you guys think and your stats if you already received a scholarship!
There are usually acceptance and scholarship threads on the individual college/university forums that would be the best place to both look for and ask questions about the information you are seeking, try there and you will find a bunch of responses to your question already. Here is the link to Pitt’s page, for example:
I am majoring in bioengineering/biomedical engineering as a pre-med, with plans to attend med school as well. My parents will help me with pitt if I can get it down to in-state costs which is about $25 a year.
Exactly, it’s really hard with UB offering me money as a SUNY school.
My kid applied to the same program, but minus the plans to attend med school (though he did get Pitt’s invite to apply to their grad program.)
He got the full tuition at Pitt, but we’re also clear across the country on the west coast. He has a 4.0 gpa, 35 ACT, 2300+SAT, NMSF and only two AP exams (no AP courses offered at our school). He does have quite a few credits from college courses taken at local LACs. We’re hoping for the chancellors scholarship, but even just the full tuition brings the cost down to well under our in-state flagship.
From what I understand, premed students who attend Pitt for undergrad don’t have an advantage over premeds from other insitutions when it comes to acceptance to Pitt med school, unless you are chosen for the GAP program, and that requires maintaining a 3.75 GPA which I imagine would be quite difficult in bioengineering.
You could still go to UB on scholarship and then apply to Pitt or other med schools.
My d got a $60,000 merit scholarship from U Pitt - she is OOS with guaranteed masters program. She got into the freshman entry nursing program. She is debating between two universities - both freshman entry - but two completely different parts of the country.
33 ACT; 34 Superscore - 4.1 GPA - classes in high school focused on math and science and classes she would repeat in nursing @ college (STATS, Biology, Anatomy, Physics, etc…)

that true…For one reason is that UPitt Med is private, unlike UPitt undergrad, which is public. UPitt Med has a tuition of about $50k per year…plus fees, supplies, and living expenses (about $20k more)
Hi @samanthabw - Did you make a decision? My son is in a similar position. Buffalo Honors College with $5000/yr, Binghamton (no merit), Stony Brook with $3500/yr., Pitt with $7000/yr. It makes Pitt $37,000 vs. Bing $25,000 vs. Buff about $18,000. We visited Pitt yesterday and he just loved it. Beyond loved. He says Buffalo feels like a prison. I feel he would really flourish at Pitt and the positive environment and supportive atmosphere would bring him out of his shell. He also really wants to be in an urban campus where he can easily walk to city-type things. But is it worth $48,000 over 4 years? Or $76,000 vs.UB?
