Visited once so far cross country and going again in April. I’m sorry, I feel like I’ve offended you somehow.
Love the stats. Did not look at UDel but UMass has 75% IN state - URI 50%
Commuters - UMass has 40% off campus; URI 54% off campus
LOL - not at all, just curious on how you are drawing your conclusions - from social media, on campus etc. Please do not be so concerned - this is all info gathering from my point of view totally without judgement - after 45 plus years on this planet I do not care what people think only why and what brings them to their conclusions. Just curious but thank you for your concern!
@bethy1 We are from New England and my ds20 was accepted to both URI and UMass. He actually did freshman year at UMass, but it was all online from his childhood bedroom during Covid. He honestly wanted wanted a do-over after that difficult and isolating experience, and since he’d made no social connections, he decided to transfer and start fresh. It was all more about him and Covid and his personal circumstances than anything about UMass. Feel free to dm me if you have questions.
Re: URI, Lots of kids from my kids’ Hs end up at URI, and both of my kids have friends there who absolutely love it. However, they do confirm what you’ve mentioned re: prevalence of Greek life. In addition, the beach houses the upperclassmen live in necessitate transportation back to campus for class, so that’s something to consider as well. We’ve visited campus several times for official admissions events and unofficial drive throughs. It’s really pretty, but the 2 schools vibes and surrounding areas are very different for sure.
My son was there the same year for the covid freshman year - first semester at home via zoom, second semester on campus and difficult but stayed and it is great. Sorry to hear about your child’s experience.
We have visited URI only 5 times and now have a Junior at UMass - we have found them very similar but to each their own and as I said each person perspective is different - our child is very involved at UMass - frat, TA, club team captain so he / we know of a lot of what happens from him actually doing it - URI we have only been to about 5 times but we get the same vibe - again only have the real solid experience from UMass but with our oldest in NH we have another side to it - college is what you make of it and what you get involved in (or not). Please feel free to DM me as well to get more info on Umass
Helpful info - thanks.
UD = University of Delaware. Daughter was told that students call it UD not UDel. Maybe she was pranked!
This is 100% true
Learned that when my oldest enrolled
Any updates/insights on regular decision apps? D is waiting but a classmate was accepted on Friday.
Hi! My daughter was accepted to URI and we are headed our in April for one of the tours. We are from Bay area and looking for some help. Any guidance on hotels, travel (fly to boston, train to URI?) etc. Also she didnt get into her first choice i state and hoping for an awesome experience. Any good news to share about URI and why a west coaster would fall in love. She wants to rush, very social and love sports. I am hoping she will try out for club team wherever she goes but who knows. Thanks in advance
sorry for typos - shame you cant edit
Can you fly in to Providence airport (T F Green) and rent a car? I feel like that would give you the best opportunity to explore the area and it would allow you to avoid Boston area traffic.
I think the area is beautiful in April. The flowers and trees should be budding, and it will be cool-ish but very pleasant, and I think the ocean nearby will be pretty. I don’t know much about the college itself, though.
ETA: and, if you have extra time and are looking for something fun to do, you could pop over to Newport. They have mansions from the early 1900s that are museums right on the ocean and the cliff walk along the ocean. Also, the Newport downtown has a lot of cute restaurants.
Thanks! There are no direct flight from Bay Area to RI - as far as I can tell so far. Nervous our travel will end up being a 10 hr thing vs 6/7 hrs if we go that route.
OK, then you probably want to rent a car at Logan airport and drive to Kingston. It’s about a 2 hour drive, but it can be more depending on the time of day if traffic around Boston is nasty.
Both train and bus service from Boston to Kingston require that you get from the Boston airport to South Station downtown-ish (using the Silver Line). It’s doable and a good fit for an energetic student, but personally I would prefer to just rent a car at the airport and drive because I would want to have a car around Kingston. Your student probably won’t need one when she is a student there, but as a parent visiting the area I would want to have a car.
We are headed to Welcome day on April 1 from the West Coast, too! Washington State! This will be our second visit - my daughter loved the vibe of the campus and most especially the state of RI. Her only real concern is whether the academics would be rigorous enough for what she wants. URI is in her top 3 at this point.
Other pros of URI - off campus housing is generally at the beach. Trains from campus to Boston and NYC. Medium sized school. Friendly and social student body. Lots of school spirit with sports. Providence close by.
We are looking forward to the admitted student day April 1 for Nursing. No worries here about the rigor as they have been churning out great nurses for a long time! Beautiful campus, lots of students, near the ocean - and the area is lovely - city of Providence for food, Newport nearby for all kinds of things and coastline. It is a great state U like most are!
Thank you this is great to hear about rigor! My daughter is doing Biology (not premed) and so I’m hoping that the strong nursing program is indicative of what her experience might be like.
While I have you what is the word on the food? It seems like it’s likely normal college food - some good and some bad? Our daughter has some medical issues where it’s hard for her to find safe food to eat and this is one of my only worries about the school.
She doesn’t need “gourmet” just simple and not fried everything. And fresh veggies and fruits. And some non dairy options hopefully.
