I doubt it’s for sports, I’m pretty sure her school has never had a sports scholarship recipient anywhere. Very small school of 680 in NC, about 2 hrs from Richmond. I’ve got calls and e-mails in to the counselors, who are not surprisingly all out of the office on the day after the letters made it to the homes. I doubt they’ll actually tell me what her short coming is, but I have high hopes. We went on 2 official tours there, one where she actually sat in on a class, and we stopped by the admissions office when we were there for a football game. And it’s not like she’s some one-dimensional study robot either, she dances, is in the band, theater, chemistry TA, had a summer long paid internship, church groups, etc. A very social kid who is loved by her teachers and pretty much everyone that meets her. Sure I can say that since I’m her dad, but I’ve got lots of proof that it’s just not me saying it. I still just don’t get it. The only thing I can think of is that her school doesn’t rank, and they don’t have any honor societies either, cause everyone of them would qualify, so that’s missing on her resume. But again, the admissions people know all about the school, so they know all of these things.
@ShredderRob I would only have your daughter call. If you are making the call you are only hurting her chances. She has great stats, and a decent number of AP’s. On their admissions blog they report receiving 5,700 applications, so they could afford to be very selective. It’s not all about scores.
@lalander111 they report receiving 5,700 applications on their admissions blog. I really think early is how most applied this year. It’s way up everywhere!
Accepted!!! 3.75 UW, 32 ACT, lots of diverse EC’s, 10/10 letters of rec, 9/10 essays. I hope this helps. I can’t believe I got in!!! Go Spiders!!
I thought about that, but she’s in class all day when the office is open, and besides that she barely has enough time to eat or sleep enough. It’s too late anyway, I already sent the e-mail. I was very nice and said that she’s very interested, and asked what she could do to improve her chances. I realize it’s not all about numbers, and while she’s only got 4 APs, most of her classes are considered above AP, and will count for college credit. One school that already accepted her said she’d come in one class shy of being a sophomore.
accepted with a 33 ACT (34 superscored) and 3.61 GPA UW! pleasantly surprised I was accepted considering I haven’t demonstrated much interest. either way, congratulations to all! best of luck to those who were deferred.
Accepted today from NH!
GPA - 4.8/5 weighted
5 APs
1400 SAT
very strong essays
i believe very strong ECs with leadership positions in quite a few
i also submitted videos of me dancing which i think gave me an edge as their program is pretty small and hopefully will give me a chance at richmond scholars since no word on a presidential one
I still haven’t gotten my letter? Located in New Jersey. Should I call admissions or are there other people relatively close to Richmond that haven’t heard back?
@airpoz I’d give it a week. Who knows with the post office! I’m sure that’s all they will tell you.
@2022soon ok, will do. The waiting is the worst part.
Accepted!!! 1420 SAT 3.85 UW 7 APs, Very strong extracurriculars
Just Mom here… D18 applied EA because we cannot be held to a binding ED agreement without knowing Financial Aid pkg, but UR is definitely one of her top 3 choices… probably her top choice but she is trying to be vague in case of let down. We are DYING down here in South Alabama waiting for the snail mail! But also excited to find this thread and know that we were not suppose to get an email (we were wearing out the refresh bar all weekend!)
Son was accepted. 1470 SAT, 32 ACT (34 superscore), rigorous schedule, quality ECs with leadership and focused around a common interest. I was not quite sure about his chances at Richmond because we live far enough away that showing interest through visits was not practical, and I have heard they use demonstrated interest for yield protection. If financial aid package makes this affordable for us (and I hope it does, as Richmond seems to check all the boxes we are looking for), then we will schedule a visit very soon.
@ShredderRob Wow, great stats. I’m sorry she got deferred. My only guess is that they probably thought she would have some of their competitor schools on her radar. A lot of times applying ED pushes people like that into the acceptance pool. I’m sure she’ll get in during RD.
can those who were accepted comment on whether you had a hook or not- i.e. legacy etc
Thanks!
Befuddled but trying to remain hopeful in VA
and what state you’re from?
DD
Accepted today in CO
4.3 W/1380 SAT
10 AP classes
Strong ECs -too many to list with leadership skills
Legacy-grandfather and cousin (maybe hook as well as geographical location)
@dochoo I think my only hook is that I have a single mom and perhaps that I don’t think they get many applicants from New Hampshire
One of the things I heard (my son really) from the school counselors is that Richmond is looking to diversify the geographical regions their students come from as they are making a strong push to move higher up in the ranks. This can be the simple reason that many in their typical admit areas (within 3 hours of school) may be getting deferred.
We have no ties to the school. From NY.
Hey, to those of you who were deferred, don’t stress about it too much I’m sure everything will turn out ok in the end! I was also deferred as an international student (I asked for lotsa aid), and my letter said: “As a result of this review, your application is currently being considered for merit scholarship opportunities through the Richmond Scholars Program. Because we are need-aware for non-U.S. citizens and committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated financial need, we must defer your admission decision until we know all Richmond merit opportunities for which you qualify.” I wonder if I was the only one whose letter said this or is it a thing they write to everyone? Replies from international students who asked for aid are highly appreciated, though I’d be happy if anyone really responded ;D
