Great day and a half at UofR! Heading back to Maine in the morning. My daughters decision is made and it’s UofR for her! We knew that anyway, but it’s official. She’s gotten one outside scholarship so far, for $300, and we just blew that at the bookstore! Oh well. We’ll be back in August!
@yokennyr - We head out for our admitted student on Thursday (by way of Boston to visit BU). What is your D planning to study at U of R? S is looking at economics and computer science.
@singermom4 She will be doing a double major of Bio (pre-med) and Spanish.
I also am really stuck between Emory and u of r!! I am concerned about the type of kids that go to each school and where I would fit in more. Can anybody describe the social aspect differences at both schools? Also do you think the kids are more competitive at one over the other?
I think posters here are likely to describe UR only. In our case, we have a kid and that kid’s significant other and a bunch of other kids - all recent graduates - as our knowledge base. I would describe them as normal people who are very interested in what they do, who have lots of hobbies/interests they love to pursue, and who are not competitive with each other. They are self-motivated, self-driven, more interested in what they learn and do than in beating someone else, except in competitive situations. I’ve seen this a lot at UR: clubs, groups, etc. are based on sharing and participation not on outdoing your peers.
There isn’t much of a dress-up culture like at some schools. The frat scene is relatively small - and the on campus houses are now run by ResLife - and NY State has a law against sorority houses so they have floors in certain dorms as their houses. I’d say much of the social life revolves around clubs/groups/activities and how much you choose to involve yourself, plus your friends. Some kids have a more off campus life than others.
