Emory vs. University of Rochester

Hi all,

I’m currently choosing between Emory University and the University of Rochester. My major for both of these schools is statistics, because I want to become an actuarial science major in the future.

The University of Rochester has an undergraduate certificate program for actuarial science, Emory does not. But, Emory’s ranking and reputation is more well-known.

Environment wise, they are both small schools and I was wondering what it’s like to be a student there?

What is the difference between the statistics program in Emory and Rochester?

Thanks!

Great idea. But Emory doesn’t have a Stats major. Do you mean QSS? Applied Math?

Huge mistake, in my opinion. The degree is worthless outside of an actuarial career… is sneered upon by too many (stuck up) “real math” majors who became actuaries… and doesn’t even help pass that many exams (most pass with two anyway)… it really is just a fast track to recruiting (I bet especially in NYC?)

And I don’t understand what you mean - Are you trying to double major?

Emory’s math program full of people who passed the first actuarial exam with less than two weeks of preparation… It corresponds well with Math 361… although Math 361 is tougher (Emory is one of the few places where the classroom is tougher than the actuarial exams)… And I know a lot of actuaries from there - so, although I’m not sure it would be as easy as it would be at Rochester, getting a job isn’t bad…

I’d recommend Emory… You’ll have better students around you, won’t pidgeonhole yourself into one career (absolutely no high school student should be deadset on being an actuary)…ATL is a top 7 place for actuaries (in my friends’ personal rankings), so, Emory’s network is pretty useful.

My apologies for the confusion. My major is Statistics for UofR, and Mathematics for Emory.

I do want to become an actuary, but I was just wondering if that extra certificate if I did graduate from Rochester would mean a lot (considering Emory doesn’t have the certificate program)

Nah, it doesn’t mean much. You either pass the exams and get a job or don’t and stay unemployed.

Emory based on weather and access to a big city.

I agree wth uesmomof2; my D was accepted to both UR and Emory. They felt similar in terms of the student body (Emory is more diverse) and campus layout but Emory’s buildings are newer. Emory’s campus is in a very nice suburb about 5-6 miles outside of Atlanta (gritty in the sense that Rochester is.) But they’re both fine options.

Can anyone comment on financial aid between Emory and Roch? A few days ago I unexpectedly found out that my EFC for Rochester was over 50k higher than my FAFSA EFC. I’m hoping I get some real aid for Oxford, but I don’t know what to expect.

UR was among my D’s top choices until she received their financial aid package (the worst of all her acceptances.) Emory’s offer was the last one she received and the third best offer. We didn’t think a need based school would be able to compete with her merit offers, so we were happy.
