University of San Diego 2021

My daughter received her waitlist too. We are actually touring the campus tomorrow. She still wants to go.

those of you who were waitlisted, what were your stats?

@Loganjt1 I think others on here are referring to academic merit scholarships awarded by USD. Your grants are a different part of your financial aid package.

@idontlikegolf - in a similar situation with my son, and we are going to try to avoid debt. I suppose if you really love the university and can keep it under $25K total loans over four years, you can pay that off with a regular job. But if it is a lot of debt, no!. UCR is a great university. USD has many great things, but it should be done only if you have $ to cover the cost or get enough financial aid that you do not have to take out huge loans.

@Loganjt1 - The important difference to consider is between merit aid that is automatically renewed with a minimum GPA (check what it is) and, on the other hand, financial aid grants that you have to apply for each year. If the letter promises it for four years, then most likely it is a merit scholarship. Check with the FA office how likely it is that they will give you a similar financial aid package after year 1 if the family income stays the same.

Congrats to all who got in and can afford it. One of the most beautiful campuses in the country!

My daughter received her waitlist letter today. Better than a rejection but she feels so unsettled. USD is her #1 choice. Time to pray REAL hard!!!

@bookguy @catbird1 Ok, mine just says USD Grant. Does that mean I didn’t qualify for merit based scholarships?

@Loganjt1 Yes - unless your letter specifically said that you received a renewable menit-based scholarship, you did not qualify. If you had received a merit scholarship, there also would have been some info about GPA requirements/how to keep your scholarship, as bookguy mentioned.

My daughter was also waitlisted, but will decline the offer. Too expensive and she got into other schools that seem like equally good fits, though with less beautiful campuses! Good luck to all of you who are waitlisted and want in, still. You now know one is off the list!

@calstudent2 Daughter was waitlisted. Letter arrived yesterday. She is so in love with her #1 school USD and is disappointed. She quipped, “USD thinks I’m only a Plan B.”

But, still thankful she got into USF (with a merit award) and UC Santa Cruz (no grants or awards). USF is her #2 school, and campus is also beautiful in a different setting.

Stats are:
ACT 29 (36 English, 30 Reading, 27 Math)
GPA 3.6
Tons of ECs, APs, exemplary essays and letters of recommendations

We are in TX and my D hasn’t heard anything. She really loved USD. Those of you waitlisted, what states are you from? Wondering if ours is in the mail headed this way or is an acceptance still possible?

I also know private schools try to balance classes by gender and in-state/out-of-state kids so you can’t simply go by your stats. My D’s were comparable to the ones listed right above. Keeping fingers crossed that they need more girls from TX!!

What state are you from?

Received my waitlist letter today too. Hoping for the best!

We got our waitlist letter yesterday & live in Northern California. My daughter’s stats were a little higher than those listed above, lifelong athlete, founder/president of a school club, works, tons of Christian service hours, goes to Catholic high school. I honestly believe there are just more qualified applicants than there are spaces & admissions is forced to make tough decisions. Five out of six students from my daughter’s high school were accepted to USD—my daughter is heartbroken.

Son was just wait listed (on east coast). Moving on - good luck to all.

Does anyone know if there is any chance of getting any financial aid if you get in off the waitlist?

@de11122 Need based aid is a possibility, but may be lower than if you were admitted regular decision. Merit based aid for waitlisted students (at any college) is offered rarely, if ever.

@txmomto3 We are in CA (SF Bay Area).

We received our waitlist letter yesterday. Very disappointed. My D was accepted at higher ranked universities (SMU #50 and Baylor #71 with money) so we were very surprised she was waitlisted. She’s a warm/sunny weather kind of girl who loves the beach. Looks like she’ll be landlocked for a while staying in TX!

Has anyone received an email to sign up for the waitlist? I’m kind of worried because they said it would be sent out within a week. My letter saying I got waitlisted was sent out March 17th, and received on March 23rd.
