I'm from out of state, so the price would be the same. Accepted for cognitive science and maybe pursuing pre-med. I'm really not sure if I will be capable but I have good work ethic. So far Ive gotten no money from UCSD and a $10,000 for USD. I'm really torn since I love San Diego and definitely want to be in California for school. Can people help me?

Anything to be said about pre-med at either school?
Which has better social aspects?

I say UCSD. We have a really great Cognitive Science program and so many people here are on the pre-med track. I think you would get much better name recognition from med schools as a UCSD student (in my opinion).

Thanks! Yeah, that’s my train of thought as well but with the bigger student body, is it more competitive? Will it hurt my chances for medical school? (class rankings and everything) Ah! And yeah, the cognitive science is 3rd in the country! But I would do Bio at USD

I’m a Cognitive Science major and it is pretty awesome. The classes are all cool and you have a ton of opportunities to do research with professors. They are all really approachable and down to earth. Plus the dept is relatively small and its not hard to make friends since you see people in your classes over and over again.

USD is a much easier school. UCSD- the gloves are off for pre-med and its dod eat dog. The number one major for med school admission is History followed by eng. USD is not in the same discussion with UCSD for academics. If You are coming from a private high school, You will be shocked at the competition at UCSD. USD is the same bubble mentality as a private high school.

I’m from a fairly large public high school in PA and its pretty competitive. I’m really not too familiar with USD (visiting in 2 weeks). Is it wiser to struggle at UCSD in hopes to finish pre med or go to USD and then come from a less prestigious University?

major in something other then pre-med…They all kill eachother for grades. USD is like Marquette. Easier academics and not the top. 3 relatives, all top dr. 1) Michigan, history major, Columbia med. school. Teaches Ped. Urol. robotic surgery at u-penn, chops… 2) UW-Plateville, eng. UW med- makes bank as a Fon du lac derm. Be smart about your undergrad degree. The USD 10k scholarship is blowing skirts up. Over priced to begin with.

Haha yeah but either way, I’ll be paying around 40-50K for undergrad unless somehow I get instate tuition (it’s actually possible for me) But yeah, I need to really set myself on a major but i dislike English and wouldn’t see myself in a history one either.

@elkayy - yes @ UCSD. I’m a 3rd year graduating this year. Cog Sci /w HCI. You should do Cog Sci and maybe do the neuroscience or clinical aspects of cognition pathway? Try to get in a lab with Nitz or another professor who does neuroscience or other bio-ish related research.

@popeyyoung5 - majoring in cog sci is not majoring in pre-med. I think Cog Sci majors are way less cut-throat than Bio majors.

I’m a third year Neuroscience and Psychology double major at UCSD, and I’m also going on the pre-med route. Basically, you can go pre-med with any major you want because med schools will be looking at your science GPA that they require for all applicants and basically just sifting through your other classes as long as you did well in them (though they’ll notice if you slack in your non-med classes). I would say just major in something you love and prepare for the MCAT, ochem classes, and so forth along the way and you should be fine. As for scholarships, they usually send them out late, usually right before the SIR is due and after Admit Day. Come to Admit Day to both the schools to get a good feel, and you should be plenty prepared for your decision afterward.

I am really sorry but i don’t understand what popeyoung5 said, can someone clarify what he said please?
