I've been looking into colleges out of the United States lately, and I was wondering if anyone knew about the University of St. Andrews, especially their History or Classics programs.

Also, does anyone know what universities in the UK have good history programs?

Are there any disadvantages to being an American and going to a UK university?

The Classics program is pretty good. It’s not Oxford or Cambridge level, but it’s on par with UCL, Durham, and King’s.

St Andrews is fairly expensive. Tuition for the next three years is set at around $21K, and room and board costs $10K. Add $1500 for airfare, and you’re looking at around $33,000 per year. Don’t expect financial aid.

Americans are not at a disadvantage in applying to St Andrews. Quite the opposite, in fact. Many British universities love Americans because they pay full freight, and Americans make up more than 1/3 of all St Andrews undergrads.

You might find it worthwhile to order the Times Good University Guide, which provides rankings for courses and interesting background about schools.
IBclasso6 is right. The 2009 guide ranks the classics/ancient history courses:
- Cambridge
- Oxford
- Exeter
- King’s College London
- Durham
- Warwick
- St. Andrew’s.

Dear .LoveLondon & IBclass06,

St. Andrews has many unique qualities and, with respect to cost, is half the price (or even less) that typical private universities in the US … current year tuition is $19K contrasting with $39K at a Harvard or Yale. What’s not to like except possibly the climate??
