University of Texas at Austin Class of 2023 Admissions

@riversider After March 1, they don’t accept anyone. So for those who’s decisions were punted until a later date, that’s it. The problem for UT is that many schools RD don’t come out until after BHP has already accepted everyone they’re going to accept. They don’t then accept more students as there is no “waitlist” other than for people who might possibly withdraw now and perhaps were accepted to Ross and already committed.

But for anyone who doesn’t accept (or withdraws) from UT after March 1, that does not open a spot for someone else unfortunately. It would be great if they were able to change that to be more consistent with UC schools, Ivies, etc. but for now they are unfortunately up against the March 1 deadline.

Denied Admission - OOS but native born Texan, 33 ACT, 4.5GPA good EC’s. Knew it was a long shot with only 10% OOS acceptance but still stings.

I would just add, depending on your major, UT is better than many of the Ivy’s. Do what you will.

@brazos21 thank you for sharing that article. Really interesting perspective on the process.

Regular decision isn’t out yet right?

From the article: “2019 UT Admissions - The New Reality”:

“There is no doubt that some kids automatically admitted to UT Austin under the current system are a poor fit while others who were rejected would be a great fit. That is the beauty of holistic admissions. The admissions officers can do their job and find the right students for the right schools.”

Straight from the horses mouth, anyone arguing otherwise can eat their words as I said they would have to when someone from admissions finally released this.

so, 1 march wave will still involve acceptances, but later there won’t be any, right?

@collegerigged except that the article wasn’t from Admissions - it was from a private college counselor’s blog. He says that the numbers are apparently from publicly posted data, but the analysis/opinion offered is his (with some creative license utilized to make his point). I thought it was interesting, but it’s certainly not “from the horse’s mouth” if by that you meant from Admissions.

Just curious, has anyone heard back from Health Science Scholars Honors yet?

@Sushi121212 I have not heard back from HSS, applied for the program one day before it was due. Wondering if that is reason I still have not heard anything.

Does anyone have any word from Regular Decision?

DS got CAP’d -
1310 SAT, 3.7Gpa, mult APs, e/c include world title and regional/national titles as well. Great LOR from grad. He’s ok with it - not his first choice school but nice to know it’s an option if he changes his mind

Hi everyone

  1. Would March 1st be the latest an honors college decision would come out (specifically CNS)?

  2. Does anyone have any insight into how the mandatory orientation is typically handled for OOS students (do they go there solo or do parents also attend - I know there is something day 1 for families, but looks like it would be killing time after that?). I wish it could just be right before classes start, so not a separate trip, but understand they have a lot of kids to deal with!

Thanks for any info you all might have. Hope this is OK to post in an admissions thread but if not, happy to post elsewhere if there is another more appropriate thread.

@dogwood18 There is an orientation in August just before classes start for those that don’t come during the June or July sessions, so that is an option if you don’t or can’t come earlier.

My understanding is that kids stay at the dorms, parents at hotels. There are different activities for each, so it is probably not necessary for parents to come. Parents I’ve heard are kept busy 1 maybe 2 days while the students are kept busy all 3.

@srparent15 thank you. Yes we had seen that August orientation option although dorms are apparently not available on campus for students for that, definitely requiring a parent + hotel. We had also heard - not sure if accurate - that classes might already be filled/difficult to register for at later orientations. That seemed a little crazy and unfair to students who have to do the August option, so I am trying to clarify if that is correct. But yes, August is an option for sure. Just trying to figure out how OOS students handle/are handed at the earlier ones and if typical for them to “fly solo”…

@dogwood18 My friend told me they open sections throughout the summer, so that is not the case regarding sections not being available in August. My daughter is rushing a sorority so she will be able to move into her dorm a week early (for a smalle extra charge). But even for orientation, they charge the students something anyway and then of course the parents have to pay for the hotel too (it never ends!). I assume other dorms have the same option. You might want to check into that as well if you know where you will be living. Or, try airbnb if you need to go with a parent as that will definitely be a less expensive option.

We are OOS and we are planning to go down during one of the June/July sessions. Although, I’m not looking forward to the hot summer Texas heat!

@romns116 Did your son get a scholarship with his Moody Honors acceptance?

@UTWannabe23

We’re very grateful and surprised.
