I got in OOS MechE and I checked the portal 1min after release. They sent the email 45 minutes later.
son admitted to CS Friday 18th or Saturday 19th
Male in-state
6/441 rank
1470 SAT (760 math)
took all APs and/or duel credit possible
only taking CS class as a senior, took engineering track offered in high school
attended cyber security camp over the summer
bilingual German / English (attended school in Germany for several weeks each summer)
lots of volunteer hours through various activities such as church, garden club at hs, national honor society activities etc.
various school clubs
very good essays (in my opinion he spent lots of time on them
very good recommendations and was able to participate in research activities at a research institution / medical school through a program in high school offered to only a select few students each year
my son has a very varied background and he was not into computers until recently over the last year
his high school is not very competitive but the top 10 students are very smart
I think many of his advanced classes had to go slower in order for much of the class to comprehend the material
I don’t know, but I feel his SAT and APs would have been higher if the top students at his school could have been challenged more
I think the admission people at universities check a student’s high school “competitiveness” and probably know when they see students like my son that his SAT / APs would have been even higher if he was at a more competitive school
He did score 5s on most of his APs but in a couple of classes like physics, the teacher had to slow down so much that he was not prepared for the exam and had little time to study with all that is going on. much of his time was helping other students by tutoring them
Good luck to everyone else,
BTW, he was also deferred in the early action round at Georgia Tech to the regular decision date on March 9
also I failed to point out that son has played piano since kindergarten and has won top awards at Gold Cup competitions. just very well rounded…he wasn’t gaming or coding all these years…but he seems to be making up for it now! and music practice has dropped way off! ;-(
We are homeschoolers too. In state. My dd is still awaiting admissions decision. She applied to CNS 1st choice; McCombs 2nd both non honors. Her stats:
Act-35
SAT-1460
4.0 uw gpa; 4.5 w
36 dual credit
EC, etc.
I was curious as to where homeschooler fell in line in the admissions process.
Is there still another wave of acceptances to come or should I just assume I have been rejected
From what we understand from previous years, there should be another big wave next Friday or so. After that, it will be small waves until March 1.
Looking at the Calendar and seeing Feb 1 is a Friday, we may have two more big waves - next Friday and Thu/Fri Jan31/Feb1. then smaller waves until March 1 - the official deadline.
i applied priority so that next friday wave would apply to me?
I’m super confused
Should we all assume that we are rejected with priority at this point?
I really don’t understand why they don’t send out rejections with other waves. It’s cruel in my opinion.
most recent news on Friday 18th about Fall 2019 Admission Decisions straight from the horse’s mouth:
https://sites.utexas.edu/admissions-news/2019/01/fall-2019-admission-decisions-continue/#more-360
I know I read that before but still find it a little bit ambiguous. What I don’t understand is those who they’ve decided not to accept-
Why don’t they just send out the rejections with these waves so as not to give false hope? I feel as if most acceptances have been sent already.
It is an awful crazy process. We were sitting here looking at Texas A&M thinking our daughter might choose to go there either way. UT has not accepted her as of yet with a 36 ACT, National Merit Semi probably finalist, rigorous, non ranking school with nothing lower than a B plus in all AP and top math/science classes allowed, above average resume…
Texas A&M has rolled out the red carpet, accepted her back in September, has a higher ranked engineering program for her chosen one, she doesn’t have to pick a specific engineering major yet, honors, and guaranteed money for National Merit.
Crickets from UT…
Seriously…choosing UT after this awful process might be difficult at this point even if she does get in.
If you read back in the thread on the UT admissions news, it looks like they are about 2/3 through. I don’t think you can really read anything into not hearing yet. People get accepted in every wave. Doesn’t matter when you get in…you are “in”.
36 ACT, 4.56 W GPA, decent ec’s
@Bayeriffic We know how you feel and were in the same shoes…until yesterday.
@Mills6 That’s is exactly how I felt…until yesterday. I have wondered if UT and TAMU have gotten together by TAMU doing rolling admissions first and let UT go later with this bs method that it uses so that not too many of the top tier students go to UT? The schools have the same objective in mind…educate Texas residents with a high quality education. I’m not sure they care which school the student goes to. They have an objective and probably don’t have the “rivalry mentality” that students have?
UT’s admission process definitely stresses me out… I applied to UT by the end of September. 1st choice to McCombs, 2nd choice to liberal arts, applied to both honor programs. Received the invitation to interview for bhp two weeks ago but still haven’t heard anything else from UT. I was so frustrated to learn that you can get rejected by McCombs even if you are considered by bhp since the application process are different
@congrats to your child! Excited for you all.
I have a hard time thinking they aren’t competing actually, but maybe you are right. I just think they might be looking for different things and she might enjoy A&M more.
I actually think my daughters grades etc aren’t the problem since lower stats kids from her school have gotten into engineering. I suspect it is that we didn’t do any outside research, robotics, etc. We chose to have her work in the summers and be a kid instead. She also chose sports over academic clubs like robotics or math club despite being interested. Her school basically made her choose which is pretty sad. I suspect (but who knows!) that her resume is not showing enough interest in engineering. Hindsight. Not sure we would do it differently though honestly.
But maybe she will still get in. I think it looks like about three big waves have gotten in and some small trickles. Hopefully 1/3-1/4 are left and she will get to decide where she wants to go!
I’m not sure if they have rolled out all admissions yet. We come from a very competitive public school where non AA are better than most AA from other schools in the state . So far, I’ve heard only AA getting in. The wait is stressful , but I’m not losing hope till Feb 1.
My child has been accepted to wherever he has applied , in state and OOS ( equivalent to UT McCombs). All Applied at the same time as UT. This Wait is killing .
@Mills6
I would be surprised if your daughter is not accepted to UT. Being a female is a ++ and with that score! Unless the essays were horrible. If she worked (and they know it) I don’t think admissions will place much weight that she didn’t join this or that club. I have known of students with those kind of stats getting denied at UT due to obvious lack of effort on essays. Otherwise, I’d just figure her application fell got overlooked somehow and then put at the end of the line for decision notifications. good luck!
@kli586 I was accepted two nights ago, but I haven’t received anything in the mail yet.
