I am sure she will get a chance to use this experience to motivate students like her in future after she becomes very successful and reaches great heights despite this setback . We wish her all the best.
^^^ I can confirm for you that TAMU is FULL of amazing, smart, top of the class over-achievers. They weren’t AA to UTA bc they come from very large, very challenging, very smart high schools, where a 101 gpa kept them out of even the top 10%, but were AA to TAMU and lead very fulfilling lives there. My older dd wanted TAMU as first and only, is excelling at mays, and is surrounded by kids rejected from UTA. The AA process really is not a workable solution, and sounds like it’s not even working for many of the brightest and best on this forum who are AA. IMO, all it really does is ensure exports of some of Texas’ great minds to schools like BC, BU, Indiana, MIchigan and others that welcome them with appreciation.
… and on that note, I guess there was no wave tonight? We can all go back to life as normal until our hope is peaked again next Friday? lol
@texmommm Reddit confirms a wave tonight. Folks on there posting acceptances
Anyone hear OOS from McCombs?
I"m not seeing anything McCombs on Reddit. Looks like just Moody, Lib Arts, and Undecideds getting in
Seems like a non-auto wave, but not OOS. Idk if they are done with OOS or there is an OOS wave coming.
Can you link the reddit link for me to see? I can’t find it on Reddit as I do not have an account there and finding threads there is confusing. I don’t have access to my child’s UT portal and she won’t check it because she is out with her friends.
DD just got into Moody…in-state, not auto, top 8%, 1280 on SAT.
Did any OOS get in today, or was this a non-auto admit in-state wave?
we seem to be unable to link bc of TOS, so you’ll have to keep looking - sorry!
how long does it take for them to email you the housing contract so you can sign it? i completed the housing application a week ago
My child just checked, and still no answer for her yet. We are still waiting… I think I need to get off the internet and stop stressing.
My DD is OOS, applied to McCombs had BHP interview, applied on 10/29 made priority deadline. The wait feels long. High stats, grades, ECs.
@123vca UT Austin will exceed the 53k apps that they received last year, this year. Auto admits almost always get reviewed for their 2nd choice (with some notable exceptions). But, unless 2nd choice was an obscure or non-impacted major, it’s common sense that it’s a whole lot of someone’s first choice. Applicants aren’t going to get priority for a 2nd choice, over another holistic applicant’s 1st choice. Admissions made a decision (with regard to major) so the appeal needs to present something new, something that wasn’t in her application. And, it needs to be compelling. “I feel like you made a mistake, because I’m a great, hardworking student” isn’t a compelling reason. UT already knows that she is! But, all space has limits.
So very significant things. For example-- Did she win state or national level awards? Or, foundation awards? Did she produce a significant piece of published work? Did she neglect to provide context around a weak spot? I recall last year a parent (her on CC) talked about how her student had to recover from a significant concussion (not a ‘missed the next game’, but a significant head injury that required extensive time off from school, and impacted grades one of her high school years, and they’d not mentioned it, or provided the medical evidence to support that. So, big things, not a reiteration of what she’s already applied with. The decision on which major to make your appeal around will be easy when you think about it. Does she have something significant and compelling… and NEW to present to make her case for both physics and math?
Also note, appeal decisions aren’t released until April. So, just be prepared for the additional wait. And, keep exploring all options.
UT has never promised auto admits their first or second choice majors. You’re only guaranteed admission to the university, and the entire rest of the review is holistic. EVERY UT admit is a phenomenal student. Every student worked hard. Every student achieved a high level of performance. It’s not even possible for every single student to get a “yes” for admission, and a “yes” for 1st choice major (or 2nd). Lots of kids got their 1st choices. Lots of kids got bumped to their 2nd choices, and some got bumped from both. That’s holistic admissions.
Good luck with the appeal. Keep us posted!
We have researched about 18 colleges for engineering and every one of them is undeclared (general engineering) for the first year – UT seems to be the only exception.
DS got into COE (Kinesiology) tonight. Applied Nov. 29th, non auto admit. I checked most of the day and there weren’t any updates. Checked at 7:45 and his status was changed to Gone to Texas!
robmomtx : Congrats! What was her GPA?
@texmommm My good friend’s daughter got into Biology tonight. She was a priority date applicant.
So, this argument starts every year, around this time, when decisions (both favorable and unfavorable) are being meted out. The fact is that the Texas Top 6/10% rule has been in place for two decades. Both UT and TAMU are very successful, highly regarded, and highly ranked (for those who follow the prestige meters) public flagships. They’re both choc full of high performing, well-rounded, talented, passionate, game-changing students (large percentages of whom are auto and auto & academic admits). There is literally no scenario where every qualified student can fit at two universities. So, it goes without saying that some highly qualified students won’t get in. Some students who get in won’t like the terms of their offer. These are bright talented students, so I’m sure they’ve got options. Students get accepted to OOS and private universities all the time. I’m willing to bet that most of the UT applicants and admits applied to more than one university. My ‘top 1%’ AA certainly did.
I can promise you that there are plenty of great minds to go around. That some will leave the state does not diminish UT or TAMU (or any of the other wonderful universities in this state that get slighted, as if there are only two worth attending). Clearly, UT and TAMU have more than their fair share.
