University of Texas at Austin Class of 2024 Admissions / Preparation

@Mullybirds – Thank you! She’s excited, and we were quite surprised. Unweighted was 3.97.

Congrats @utmomof3 !!!

@Jennibc Congrats to your friend’s daughter!

^^ “EVERY UT admit is a phenomenal student.”

Please…

I’m new here and my son is non AA because his school is very competitive. I’m very frustrated after reading everything here. My son had a 107.17 GPA, 35 ACT, 1510 SAT, 790 Physics Subject Test, only 770 on Math II but still… He was ranked 72/832. New transcript today which would have helped maybe, 51/829 and GPA now 110.09

I know his rank looks low but it’s a known school to UT so I didn’t think it would be a deal breaker. He’s also National Merit Commended, NHS (which was actually hard to get into at his school), Mu Alpha Theta, NSHS. His GPA this semester was 121.9 because he’s taking 6 AP courses-3 sciences. He wants to be a physicist. He has 3 hrs of physics at UT already through On-Ramps. Even with this whole AA thing I guess I still thought they’d be crazy to pass on him.

He has interviews the next 2 weeks with MIT and UPenn, 3 acceptances, 2 with nice scholarships, but I’m disappointed he hasn’t heard yet about UT. It’s close to home so would be a great place for him to start.

@scdmom Did your son apply by the priority deadline of November 1st? If so, he’ll get a decision by February 1st.

Yes, he applied a few days before November 1st. I know there’s still a possibility but it seems unlikely at this point and if so I’m confused it is such a hard decision for them. We know an OOS applicant who was accepted for physics with lower stats.

Pretty sure I’m in your district based on your user id. It’s very tough indeed. I don’t know but about 5 kids that have gotten in across all majors, and as you know, it should be alot higher. Gives me hopes that there is much more to come before it’s all over. Hang in there!

@scdmom Not having heard yet doesn’t mean anything other than the decision isn’t available yet. There are still plenty of acceptances to be had. And, if he made the priority deadline (sounds like he did), at most you’ve got another couple of weeks to a decision. Not having heard earlier than the posted decision date doesn’t mean that his chances are diminished.

I keep posting this-- “Lower stats/higher stats” are anxious parent and applicants barometers. That’s not nearly the sum total of UT’s admission barometers (many of them). Trying to compare stats to determine who might or should have gotten in is an exercise in futility, and not reflective of UT’s processes and standards. So, don’t drive yourself crazy with that. You will never know (because you won’t have seen the OOS student’s entire admission file, nor seen or measured it by UT’s standards) why the other student gained admission. You will never know why they gained admission before your student. And, it doesn’t matter.

All that matters is that UT says your student will have a decision by Feb 1st if you made the Priority deadline. If your student doesn’t get in, it won’t be because of rank, or rank alone. Your student will get a full holistic review, so don’t worry! He’ll have the decision soon. He’s not more or less wanted based on decision date.

There’s some other sites/blogs saying acceptances are all or mostly all out as of today. I realize they could be wrong and know I’m too worried about it. We are flying to visit a school who made a great offer in a few weeks so I’ll try and focus on that.

As to my name texmommm it’s parts of my kids’ initials but not location. I did almost use tex in it though so we do share a state.

I know multiple Plano SH and HPHS students who haven’t heard yet and applied by Nov 1. Non-AA.

No one I know has been accepted to Michigan and turned down by UT. In fact I’ve seen many deferred at Ross and accepted at McCombs.

@tristatecoog I am at HPHS and have not heard, and neither have a lot of other people here.

I really do not think the acceptance waves are done. My college counselor told me not to stress because everyone always does around this time and people are very surprised by what actually happens. And since UT is very complicated and changes frequently, we really don’t know.

@tristatecoog my child last year was accepted to Michigan OOS - EA and turned down by UT, again OOS. UT is very hard to get into OOS because they have to take the required number of in-state TX residents (75% I think). There is also a theory that they don’t take many OOS high achievers - and I have seen that year and year again. Kids getting in with “hooks” from OOS - URM and legacy - with lower stats.

DD got accepted CNS-Neuroscience entry-level this evening
In-state, Non-auto admit, top 10%, GPA-5.4, SAT-1540, ACT-35, No hooks

I know that if we had not heard on Tuesday, I would probably be extremely anxious too, so I totally understand those who are feeling this way. I know that I said that when my husband talked to admissions the other day that he was told all engineering slots were filled, but I do not know if that means all engineering slots have been offered. It could be that some of those “filled” slots have not yet been informed of the decision. The waiting is so stressful. I can’t say I’m a huge fan of the way UT does this, but I’m sure it is a difficult process for the school as well. There’s probably no way for a school of this size that gets so many applications to make everyone happy. I did like that my son got a text from Georgia Tech a couple of days ago that said “you will receive a decision at 10 am EST on Saturday, January 18.” Of course, that “decision” could very well be “deferred” which involves weeks/months more of waiting. The whole process is very stressful!

@hcmom65 good insight about the OOS competitiveness.

I thought the poster was saying TX residents were going to Michigan, IU, etc because of the 6% rule. IU, OU, Arkansas, Auburn, yes. Not Michigan. OU in particular appears to be a huge beneficiary.

If we could only figure out

Thank you for clarifying. Judging by those that posted it didn’t seem like a lot Engineering decision was sent. I think I saw Communications, Biology and Education as well as Liberal Arts was posted…I can relax this weekend and wait for Wednesday if it is following last year’s timeline.
Crossing my fingers, praying and doing what I can for my DD to be admitted into UT.

My daughter is in state auto admit was just accepted to Biochemistry major on Tuesday

Not that I’m hoping my son get in but I wouldn’t think

No kidding ? majority is a better word of choice. Phenomenal certainly has different meanings for different people. Without some (fair/unfair) advantages, some of these kids wouldn’t even be accepted. We all know the reality but some just refuse to accept it.

Very pleasantly surprised this evening!
My son received acceptance to UT and got his first choice of Electrical Engineering.
He was accepted to TAMU Engineering on Tuesday, but UT is his first choice.
stats:
GPA 4.10
SAT- 1410 (680 math/730 reading)
Non ranking, but was likely about the top 12-13%
NHS, Student Body president, robotics club president, lead roles in theater performances for three years, theater honor society, part time job for a year and a half, lots of volunteer hours (as required by the school).
Engineering dual credit class (UT credit)
Honors and AP classes throughout high school

He was a review applicant and still got full admit with first choice of major.
White, upper middle class male from a private high school in Houston.
I share all of this to tell you that it can happen! Don’t give up just because you haven’t heard yet.
