Hi- Just wanted to post this again and see if anyone had any helpful insight. He found out yesterday that only 25% are review admits and he also found out that NONE of the review admits from his small private school have been admitted in the past few years, only the auto admits. He is really discouraged and angry at his school for not offering AP classes for all four years instead of just junior and senior year. He’s very worried that he has been set up for failure
I hate that because we really LOVE his school and I have always felt that they had a great reputation for having the students well prepared for college when they leave.
Any advice or insight would be great- thanks.
@Boogie818 Like you I check this website often. IMO though, all the responses/feedback on here carry only so much value. At the end of the day, what others have and got accepted/rejected do not have much meaning for your child and mine. Each individual is different, especially now they do holistic review. It may make someone feel good to find out similar stats students got in. I’m no exception. However, that may be a fault hope. I feel you hope to hear some positive feedback but I’m afraid that the chance is slim for him. The more I read about this school, the less hope I have for my son and he knows it too before he applied. Lastly he should not blame the school or you for the outcome. It’s all him. Ad coms care more about ranking than GPAs because they know schools are different. I heard some schools even give 6 for AP which is ridiculous in my opinion. Best luck to you and your son.
@Boogie818 There is a former UT admissions counselor who has his own blog (you can google to find it). He has recommended minimum stats posted for each major. For engineering he has the following minimum recommended SAT if a student is in the top 15%:
Mechanical Engineering - 1500
Chemical, Biomedical, Petroleum, Electric/Comp - 1550
Aerospace, Architectural, Civil - 1450
Hope that helps.
When will the first wave of OOS applicants get decisions? I did find the Kevin Martin, former UT AO blog and he said with his clients a few OOS decisions have come out early to Mid-December for “truly exceptional” candidates. Anyone have any info about OOS admissions decisions?
YIKES! Thats not looking good

Do these SAT minimums apply even when a student is in top 6%?
So for Engineering, he lists the following recommended minimums for the top 5% and the top 10%. He has different minimums for computer science, business, etc.
Top 5%
Mechanical Engineering - 1400
Chemical, Biomedical, Petroleum, Electric/Comp - 1450
Aerospace, Architectural, Civil - 1350
Top 10%
Mechanical Engineering - 1450
Chemical, Biomedical, Petroleum, Electric/Comp - 1500
Aerospace, Architectural, Civil - 1400
Thanks a lot @vvsitalia. Yes we have a few other schools we are applying too as well.
@EraseEgo and @cheerchoirmom , can you post the stats needed for a computer science major? I went to his blog but couldn’t find this information you are posting.
for computer science, he lists the following recommended minimums:
top 2% - 1400
Top 5% - 1450
Top 10% - 1500
top 15% - 1550
Top 20% - 1600
How do the requirements of ECE compare to CS? It must be lower than that of CS, right?
@cheerchoirmom Can you post more scores for other colleges? What about Moody college of communication? Thanks!
@cheerchoirmom , thanks for posting that information! Any idea how UT gives a ranking to homeschoolers?
Got the letter from mailbox (paper) said: major is under evaluation. Does it mean anything?
@JonnyF My D20 also got actual letter saying something like Congratulations you are a Longhorn and still major under review. She was AutoAdmit.
Letter was dated 11/1, no banner enclosed just a plain letter.
I would take those suggested minimums with a grain of salt. First, it’s well to remember that the person giving those numbers is hardly disinterested; he’s looking for business, for people to give him money to help them gain admission. So it is very much in his interest to skew things to cause panic and fear. Second, and more to the point, while UT (at least as far as I can tell) doesn’t roll out admissions data for each college like A&M does, the overall data they post does not on the whole support the suggested minimums referenced. Instead, UT’s own data shows that for NON-Auto Admit, i.e. BELOW the top 6%, in-state freshmen, the 25th%ile - 75th%ile SAT numbers are 1210 – 1420. That implies that fully HALF of enrolled, non-AA in-state freshmen will have SAT scores of 1315 or less. That data simply does not jibe with what the admissions counselor claims via his “suggested minimums.”
Now it is of course true that there may be large differences among the various colleges, but the overall UT rollup is inconsistent with all of his suggested minimums, which, IMO, calls all of his numbers into doubt.
For any one interested in the UT Business Honors Program (BHP), my DD20 got an email earlier today with notification about Canfield Business Honors Interview, mentioning that a BHP alumnus will be contacting her soon to set up an interview.
She’s an instate, non auto-admit student and is applying to BHP & Plan II programs.
@gradan looks like a good sign! Has she been accepted to the university yet?
@StarlightSami, we still see ‘Your application for freshman admission is in review’ on MyStatus for her applications. No acceptance information. Thanks.
I can’t comment on the blogger’s suggested mins but I tend to agree with you. I spoke with an admission rep and he told me SATs are not what break/make you. He told me something like this… we look at applicant as a whole. It’s not uncommon that we rejected applicants with perfect/near perfect SATs. In any case, I feel it’s quite competitive for this school. IMO a decent applicant should have at least 1400+ to have a good chance at it. I feel A&M engineering review process is similar.
