University of Texas at Austin Class of 2024 Admissions / Preparation

This very discussion is going on over on the TAMU board. Texas already has other great schools. It’s not that the school’s need suddenly become viable ‘great school’ options. The people of Texas need to let go of their biases against every school that isn’t UT and TAMU (public options) and start seeing that Texas Tech, UT Dallas, University of Houston, in particular, are great options. And, those aren’t the only ones.

Kevin Martin is an ex UT admissions officer (he runs the Texas Admissions blog website where he discusses this further) and he says the following (taken from Reddit - you can search for “twins” and UT appeals).

“UT has an internal policy where they try not to separate twins. If siblings have similar academics and one was denied while the other was admitted, there are grounds for an appeal. The appellee may not gain admission to their first-choice major or even direct enrollment, but I recommend all twins (or even triplets) to try this route… You should include the UTEIDs of both siblings in the appeal.”

So if one twin is definitely accepting admission to UT I would think it would definitely be worth it to appeal.

@SATXMom2 I think the OOS math is off. If they want to have a class of 8100 students, they will give out way more than 810 offers, maybe 3 times that many because obviously not everyone offered a spot accepts. So OOS acceptance rate will definitely be higher than 3%, but still quite a reach!

I actually prefer TAMU. Unfortunately it is not rated nearly as high as UT for my son’s major. If he had a different passion we probably wouldn’t have applied to UT. Despite the proximity to home, I am not a fan of Austin and I love the culture at TAMU. I regret not going there myself.

yes that’s correct…

I was capped Thursday evening.

In-state, very rigorous public HS in Dallas
31 act (35 English, 29 Math, 30 Reading, 31 Science)
3.653 GPA
500+ volunteer hours
Very strong essay/extracurriculars
I have visited campus three times this year and shown demonstrated interest at multiple college fairs.

@suzley15 good to know! Thank you for that information, I’ll pass it on to my friends.

@smuckersbytyler Unfortunately, UT doesn’t factor in demonstrated interest. Some schools do and some don’t and UT is one that does not.

My DS received the notice for CS turing scholar a couple of days ago. The turing scholar event will be late Feb. Does anyone now if UT Austin will pay for the trip to attend the turing scholar day event for OOS?

@hbzheng I would be shocked if they did, but that’s such a specific question, I’d call the program if I were you.

@hbzheng I agree with @Jennibc and do not think UT will pay for your travel expenses to attend the CS Turing Scholar event. The event is intended to give you more information about the program and help your student make the decision to attend. It’s really more of a chance to sell you on how amazing their program is. I recommend that you attend if possible. You will be impressed.

I 100% agree and hope to see more people let go of their biases. My son will be attending UT but we were super impressed with the Honors College at UH.

Can we talk about housing. Does it make a difference if you pay enrollment deposit now Vs in April.

@txmom19 It makes absolutely no difference - here’s what housing told me when I asked “He does not need to rush his admission decision. He has until May 1st to make his decision and it will not affect his housing placement. Contracts are offered in application date order. If we start offering contracts and he hasn’t accepted, we’ll temporarily skip him and then continue to check every time we offer more contracts. Room selection doesn’t occur until June–well after the May 1st admission deadline. Once he receives and completes his contract, he’ll be able to enter his preferences. Once room selection time comes in June, timeslots are given in housing application date order so he’ll still have his same October priority date.”

@Jennibc Thank you!!

are OOS priority decisions expected this week as well? we are OOS and D applied priority and the status still shows your file is in review.

@sganny Priority applicants who are still waiting for a decision should get a decision sometime this week (by 2/1/20) or a deferral to March 1st.

@TXMom19 and @Jennibc it’s true you have until May 1 to accept your offer of admission. However, in previous years you had to accept the offer of admission before you can register for orientation. Orientation opens on March 4 and some sessions will fill up quickly. You can still cancel your admission until May 1 without losing your deposit.

@FloMoMom Yes, good point! I was only quoting what housing relayed to us as that is what the question is related to. But yes, we have it on our calendar for my son to push that accept button sooner than later (why he won’t do it now is beyond me, maybe because he thinks it will jinx things ) And an earlier orientation is important because that is where students register for classes. Once you pay for orientation you CAN get a partial refund if you choose not to go there as long as you cancel your spot with an early enough notice.

@FloMoMom thank you. I did not know that you have to accept the offer in order to get invitation for orientation.
