@txmom19 I don’t think UT has any official admitted student days. Some programs (think nursing, engineering honors, LAH, Plan II, BHP) offer an invitation-only event where they will share all the details/statistics/relevant info for that program. In my experience, these events have been held on a Saturday in February or March. If your dd or ds is invited to one, you should attend! (And no, they won’t be providing or reimbursing any travel expenses you might incur.)
You can always schedule a campus visit this spring. I think Admissions offers a special session just for admitted students. That’s probably the closest thing UT has to an admitted student day.
Explore UT is a good day to visit campus. Yes, it’s crazy with a zillion people. But it will truly give you an idea of allllllll the things available at The University of Texas at Austin. My DS said he could have attended UT twice and participated in completely different activities w/o duplication.
@txmom19 Our son got accepted into McCombs OOS, we never visited the school. Really excited to visit and get to know more about the school on Admitted student day. I contacted McCombs, they were not aware of it and directed me to the General Admissions, the staff who answered the phone informed me there will be a visiting day for admitted students, but she doesn’t know when. I asked her when it was for last year. She refused to tell me. I also asked if the student will receive the email invitation for this, she doesn’t know. My son gets weekly emails and mails from every other school he has been admitted to inviting him to visit. We are very surprised that UT Austin handles differently. I have to admit this is quite frustrating.
Thank you @FloMoMom for providing detailed info. @tongyimom I am also experiencing difficulties in finding information, but people here on CC are so helpful.
My auto-admit son was admitted a few days after applying for the 11/1 priority deadline. He was admitted to his top major (CNS) about two weeks ago.
We haven’t received financial aid notification yet (we do not qualify for need-based aid or grants). Any idea when those are posted? It said to check back in two weeks and I think it has been two weeks or so. He’ll likely be attending another school since he’s gotten excellent aid packages from two other schools already.
My husband and daughter are flying down from NoVA next week. There is an academic and campus resource session next Friday and they will do a campus tour. Hoping we can get someone from Marine Science to chat with them too. Big decisions and very far from home. Couldn’t find an actual Admitted Student’s Day.
I got into Cockrell School of Engineering for Electrical Engineering, and I was wondering how the major is in the school. If anyone knows people that go there, I would like to know as someone who got in with low stats (1380 SAT 610R 770 M). Thanks in advance.
Would LOVE to hear from someone who has kids at UT already or might be “in the know” how the scholarships work. When do we find out, how generous are they and what’s the likely-hood for a student accepted through in state review (non AA) to engineering.
Non need based as we don’t qualify.
I have heard of some people being notified the same time they were admitted into particular honor’s programs (communications) and others had UT show up to their door with a giant check for something called an impact scholarship I think, but I believe it is all over the map in terms of how people find out and when.
@Boogie818 We did not find UT to be very generous with scholarships. Both Longhorns received smallish scholarships for continuing students but nothing big up front - or ever! One small scholarship was awarded with acceptance to Engineering Honors notification in March of senior year (in high school). The year after my DS started at UT was the year they offered some large endowed engineering scholarships - for new students! UT does not award many large scholarships like many other big universities. I would not count on any scholarship money and consider it a bonus if your student gets one.
Does anyone have comments about private dorms? I am considering Dobie as an option for my son. I don’t like having to wait until June to find out if he will get a room at Jester and several of the others are not desirable.
Dobie actually has better prices for the same style of living. They include a meal plan and are as close to on campus as actually being ON CAMPUS as you can get.
I posted a bit ago about my son getting CAP admission. He wants Engineering so we are not considering it at all. Good news is he applied to 3 other UT schools and got the following academic scholarships:
He got offers from some private schools and from out of state but nothing really met what he wanted. Rice/Vanderbilt had great academics but no option for private rooms he wanted so we did not even apply.
He also made it into TAMU but their General Engineering scares us as he wants EE, and they only offered $1500 per year in need-based grants. We also did not like their dorms and the spread out campus. All of the other UT schools admitted him into Electrical Engineering.
I was worried that if he got into UT Austin he’d have a hard time finding a room he could afford/like that he would live at home - which is not good for studying/meeting friends. We live about 20 miles outside Austin - that commute would be hell on I-35.
Tonight, we decided to apply for housing at UTA as it is his best option. We were surprised that he already has a guaranteed spot in a dorm with 3 single rooms sharing a living room and a split restroom - sinks in a hall, a toilet in one room and a shower in another. One of the nicer dorms we’ve seen.
We signed up for their top meal plan. Cost will be $6443 for room and $3865 for board per year. His scholarship will cover tuition/fees. Then all we got left is books and transportation.
As for the other options, UT Tyler seemed a bit too small and isolated. It did not have a lot of facilities and we had trouble finding out about maker spaces my son wants. We didn’t like the feel of UT Dallas - seemed too corporate and cold and room/board/tuition costs were several thousand higher.
UT Arlington seemed a better fit for having more facilities and better internship opportunities and more helpful folks. We next need to decide on Honors College or not. And time for another visit. This is giving me gray hair.
No current research on private dorms but my older sister lived one year at Dobie decades ago (couldn’t get an on campus room), followed by a year at Kinsolving and a year at Blanton. I stayed 2 years in Jester community bath. My older son started at UT in 2016 and that Spring I toured Dobie with my sister who was curious to see what Dobie looked like now. They were interested in showing me around since I had an incoming freshman and for the price with pretty much unlimited meals, seemed like a great deal. My son was not interested at all. I did some independent research and it seemed like some complaints about Dobie were before the renovation (bad a/c system, poor ventilation, security concerns) - I’m not sure what recent reviews are. I figure having to go back to the Dobie for meals might be inconvenient, whereas with on campus housing you would have access to meals at more places around campus.
I have a high school senior son now who may attend UT and his choice is Jester connecting bath. The price is so high now with the unlimited meals. I think the price is about $3K more per year than what I paid for my older son.
Yes- this is why Dobie really interested me. I had friends that lived there back in 1990-91 and remember really being jealous of what they had vs. what I had for my dorm at UH in Houston. Looking at it in the pictures now, it seems to be much nicer and offers more than any of the dorms on campus. I figured we could offset the meals issues with a small commuter meal plan or “bevo bucks” or whatever that is.
I have asked my son to look into it and consider it seriously. I just wish we could know something before the summer as I know he’d LIKE to be in Jester.
@123VCA
My daughter submitted a letter of recommendation with her appeal. Her teacher emailed her the PDF of the recommendation letter and my daughter uploaded it in the main supporting document section (where she also uploaded her updated resume). In that section, there is a LOR document type, so it seemed to be an acceptable way of doing it.
@hcmom65 It looks like it happens everywhere unfortunately for us. Kids with high stats no hooks are the last to get admitted right now to any college.
