University of Texas at Austin Class of 2024 Admissions / Preparation

I’m in state, 4.3 GPA, 4 APs and I’m taking 4 more next year, 2 community college classes, and two OnRamps classes from UT, my rank is 9/77 and I volunteered in a hospital, I was secretary of NHS, and a HOSA member, I want to apply for clinical lab science. I have a 1390 SAT

@skjj52 All appeal decisions were released by 4/6 ( I think). My son and two students at his school (that I know of) got in via the appeals process

My D is still trying to decide between UT HSS program and USC for pre-med. It is such a hard decision. Everywhere she reads, they mention to pick a small school for pre-med. Can anyone share their or their child’s experience with UT HSS for pre-med.

@British TX Parent could you please share your son’s experiences in CNS HSS. My D has some questions if you could please help answer those:

  • How is pre-med advising.
  • Do the students take all honors classes? what are the class sizes?
  • Do they get to know the professors enough in order to get good rec letters.
  • What is the acceptance rate to med schools?
    Any info is appreciated.

Pre-med advising - it’s the same as it would be for any pre-med student at UT via the on campus Health Professions Office. Where the HSS kids really have an extra advantage is with their academic advisor, Mark. He really guides the kids with their course selections and he is always available to ask questions.

No the students do not take all honors classes. In fact this would be quite negative for most students on a pre-med track as they would want to maintain as high a GPA as possible for med school applications. The only students who take all honors classes at UT are Dean’s Scholars. HSS kids do an honors UGS class Freshman year (he still hangs with his honors cohort group) plus they must take 315H and 325H that year which is honors genetics. This is actually a plus because he understands that there is a higher percentage of A’s in this class than in regular genetics. Apart from this class (which I can’t quite remember but I think was around 35 kids), most classes like Chemistry 301 &etc are huge.

Professor relationships will be what your student makes of them. If they go to office hours etc then they will meet their professors personally. My son has actually found the FRI to be a great way to get involved with research and get to know a professor. He is now a mentor for the Bioactive Molecules stream (BAM). This is a great FRI to be in as it meets the organic chemistry lab requirement and once again it is easier to get an A grade this way than actually taking ochem lab like most pre-meds. Just to add - he’s a v high achieving student so I’m only basing these comments on his personal experiences.

There are no official med school acceptance rate figures. Unofficially we were originally told that most kids go into either research (they encourage the research angle) or on to med school after graduation. We had understood that there was a 100% acceptance rate but my son knows of some kids that didn’t get in so I guess this isn’t true!

Hope that helps!

@British TX Parent Thank you for a detailed response. I really appreciate your input.

The housing process for UT Austin occurs later than most other universities, but I would suggest having a roommate in find for when the time comes.

How do guys find a roommate? The FB page is 10:1 girls.

@kmacrna Hi! Incoming freshman here, I just asked a good friend of mine who was also going if she wanted to room with me, so we’re set! If you have in real life friends who are going with you, ask them! If not, just fill out the housing application, create a group, and manually look for available students that fit how you want your roommate to be. It can also be randomized.

I was accepted OOS an as Econ major in COLA. I was wondering if anyone has information on the Econ program and what it can offer? Deadline is coming up soon to accept admission and trying to make a decision! Thanks

My son received the Canfield BHS Scholarship ($ 13,500 per year/$54,000 for 4-years) today. As OOS, now we have to pay $49,500 per year after this scholarship. I heard that the scholarship holders get in-state tuition at UT-Austin from sophomore year.
Is it true?

My son also got into U-Mich Ross and we have to pay $67,000 per year and no scholarship/grants.

We need to decide between these two great programs. Please advise. Thanks in advance.

@MyCollege2024 I heard that kids who get scholarship pay in state tuition starting from freshmen year. So I think you should call them and confirm.

@MyCollege2024 Two great choices!

Regarding the tuition waiver, certainly have your son confirm with an advisor, but if you look on the McCombs website under “Tuition and Funding” it states, “Non Residents can be considered for scholarships through the University. Please note: McCombs does not award non-resident tuition exemptions to undergraduates.”

And on the BHP website, it says, “Please note, Canfield Business Honors Program merit-based scholarships do not apply to UT-wide financial aid or scholarships.”

From this information, I don’t think either a McCombs general scholarship nor a Canfield scholarship would invoke the in-state tuition provision.

@nolan Yes, I checked it at McCombs website. You are right. Thank you for sharing the info.

Does anyone has experience transferring from one honors program to another in CNS? My D got accepted to HSS but now thinks that Dean’s scholar may be a better fit for her? Is transfer possible? How do we go about it?

@MaineLonghorn and anyone else! Do y’all think it makes any difference for admission in applying to UT on August 1 vs. September 6th? ie, does the early bird get the worm? My son will be applying for the next cycle (Class of 2025) for Computer Science or Engineering and doesn’t have a rank bc he is homeschooled in Texas. He has an SAT score from last October that he could apply with on August 1st. He was able to get an August 2020 SAT test date locked in (no easy feat with this College Board/Covid19 disaster summer) and so he could wait and see if his score improves and just apply when those scores come out on September 6th. What do y’all recommend?

What is your rising freshmen planning to do for the fall semester? Going to the campus for some online and some in person classes or staying home for online classes? or taking a GAP year/semester?

@txmom19 Daughter was planning to attend campus/dorm. She might have loss her roommate, whose classes all moved online and was coming from Houston. Everything is up in the air now.

My freshman daughter was planning to live on campus but is now not sure. Will there be a decent social aspect to campus life? All of the classes she’s registered for are available online. So…not sure what to do. What are your freshman doing?

@advicegatherer Well D20 doesn’t get to register for classes until July 22nd, but it seems maybe 4 classes will be in-person/hybrid, the others online. She is due for room selection in Monday 7/6. I have to say that the possibility of 5-min showers have her looking into shated-bath now. This is going to be a long weekend…
