Any idea how that works if a kid isn’t committed yet?
@pinkcactus456 , congratulations!! That is awesome news!!
@rbc2018 , do you mean for housing? I believe someone on here posted that you have 10-14 days to commit when they send out your housing contract. So, I’m guessing that you would have to sign a housing contract by then even if you haven’t committed to the university. That would be tricky though----to make sure you cancel the contract if you don’t attend the university, otherwise you would have to pay for the entire year as per the contract you signed.
Well, I woke up on Friday feeling like my son wasn’t going to get into honors and lo and behold, he just received a rejection email. So, not surprised… I am surprised though to learn that honors students don’t receive priority registration. I just assumed they did like TAMU students. If any electrical engineering guys get into honors who want to stay in the Honors quad and are interested in touching base about a roommate, let me know! (As I understand it, only one student has to be in Honors and my son was an August 28th timestamp. And I think whoever has the earliest timestamp gets to sign up first.)
Sorry to hear about your son. On your other point, honors students do receive priority registration, except for the first registration during freshman registration.
@srparents15, thank you. Maybe they have changed things this year concerning early registration? This is what the email said " Please know that you are not missing out on access to honors curriculum, priority registration or smaller classes as a result of this decision. The Engineering Honors Program does not include these features."
Interesting. Maybe for Engineering Honors. I can find out from current parents if you’d like. For Business Honors, they definitely get priority registration, but it’s also based on the number of credit hours they have. There are also certain courses that only Business Honors students take, so the priority isn’t relevant, what is relevant in that case is the number of hours you have. My daughter has said that scholarship recipients get priority too, as well as students with accommodations because they need to make sure their needs are being met, which makes sense.
Yes, I was talking about housing, thanks. It seems odd to require kids to commit to a housing contract before May 1. I assume it is contingent on enrolling??
We just got the bad news on ehp too…gotta move on…but definitely put a damper on things
@rbc2018 Maybe it is a move to encourage kids to go ahead and commit ahead of May 1st? At any rate, just be sure to cancel the contract if you don’t end up committing. I’ve heard that over and over bc it is a binding contract (well, atleast at TAMU and I’m assuming at any university once you sign a contract).
My son got into McCombs as well and will live in Calloway. The only kids I know that live in UT dorms are athletes so I’m just following what people I know have done. I’m sure the UT dorms are great too. My son loves the single room idea of Calloway! I do know Calloway is quite social!
As far as I know the big negative to Calloway is the price. And, perhaps for some students, it might be too social. I have no first hand knowledge…only what I hear.
Honors students, at least in LAH, do get priority registration. And you are correct about the Honors quad but also anyone can live there if there are enough spots (no honors roomie necessary if there are extra dorm rooms available).
It’s nice on the surface, food is horrible, I had to buy my daughter Bevo Bucks so prepare for that, they tried to stay open last year during covid when everything else closed and refused to give refunds when common areas were closed which was in breach of their contract. Had to get lawyers involved and finally were given refunds but then they didn’t want all residents to know so come June many families only then found out about the refunds and that was another issue. I’m sure even now some don’t even know that refunds were given. Punchlist items from move in were never fixed, including a broken electrical outlet. Signage on walls were also not changed regularly. We visited in February but signs advertising events a month before were still up in the hallways and elevator. RA’s no were to be seen. Laundry is on even floors only (unless in 4x4 and in that case they’re tiny machines), study rooms on odd floors. Make sure you bring your own printer, otherwise you need to run down to print which is inefficient. Most who live there are greek so if you want to go greek and don’t get in a house it can be rough. For covid this year it was rampant in there and when one member in a suite got it, instead of the person leaving or going to the covid hotel (which was more than adequate) the member stayed in the suite and in most cases the entire suite then got it. The dorm hasn’t filled for a few years so don’t feel pressure to sign a lease. It’s a great location but lots of homeless so you need to be careful. Castillan is same owners but much cheaper. Also, highly recommend getting an amazon lockbox or using the fedex place down the block for mailing packages as they suck at that and claimed to have not received one of ours sent and daughter’s roommates had similar issues. It resolved when we demanded a credit and boom the package suddenly was found. More than a week after we had been trying to deal with them. They often only have students running the place and overwork them. They’re nice, but they should have adults on premises at all times.
Same bad news here. My son got the rejection for EHP ECE today.
Same news here. My daughter got rejected for the EHP ECE. We went with SAT optional when applying EA several months ago.
Just wondering if the people that got rejected not send their SATs?
Thanks for taking the time to leave your help review here! Wow, that is some real concerning stuff.
Trust me if my daughter had to live in a dorm again she would still live there but as a parent and for what we paid, I might have tried to make a deal to get her to go to Castilian instead and give her some of the money difference. Similar dorm, a few less amenities but cheaper. My other daughter at her school lived in a disgusting dorm that grossed me out. She never complained once. Callaway tbh is exactly where I would have sat my butt in college too and admittedly I did live in a private dorm at my college too. The rooms are nice and sharing a bathroom with only one person was nice even in a 4x2. A 4x4 to me is 100% unnecessary.
