@antiquedealermom , do you know how things went this year with covid and roommate options once kids started bailing out of housing contracts? Like, were paired kids offered the opportunity to go to single rooms at some point? Or did the roommates bail out and they just didn’t fill his spot with another one? I’ve heard that most of the dorm rooms only have a single student in them this year.
Are the FIGS (First year interest group) the same thing as UGGS 302/303 (Signature courses)? And how many hours is a FIG class? 1 hour? 3 hours? I’m looking at the course arrangement guide for ECE and I don’t see the FIG listed.
I’m not sure there are engineering FIGs. I didn’t see it in the ASE degree plan. My DD (2019 Moody) had one. It was a 1 hour course where they met 1 once a week and were taught things like how to navigate the Health Center, Learning Center, Austin bus system etc. It was great for learning practical things about the university and Austin. Also, they were all assigned to the same 2 classes at the same times. It was a great way for my DD to meet people in her SLP major. Many from her FIG still take classes together. Just not sure engineering has room in the schedule.
UGS is a class in the Common Core that all must take. 302 is big lecture, if I remember correctly. 303 is small group and sometimes also includes a writing flag. Each course is about a different topic. My DD took UGS 303 Films from Down Under with the writing flag. Kids can choose between 302 or 303. My DD’s ASE BF is a sophomore and still hasn’t taken his UGS because they fill up very quickly.
Why not just live in one of the on-campus non-honors dorms? There are a lot of them that would work well for a studious non-greek freshman, and he would have a meal plan. I think that is a better option than being in an off-campus apartment freshman year, which could be isolating. If you paid the housing deposit early he should have no problem getting a spot.
If you put down the housing deposit in December your LH should be able to get a spot on campus.
I completely agree with this. Do the on-campus dorm, just research to see which ones most appeal to you. It sounds like your son submitted housing deposit very early, so he should have no problem getting into one of the ones he wants.
Oops, I think you meant to reply to someone else. I have an older daughter at UT who lived in Callaway. My hs senior son elected not to apply to UT. But your reply is accurate.
My daughter took a ugs that was small, so many of them are, you just need to find the ones that are of most interest. Her professor left so I don’t think the class is offered any longer but it was a desirable one.
@DTXMom , yeah, I’m coming to the conclusion that an on campus dorm would be better for his situation. We’ll try for the honors quad and have a couple of back ups ready.
My husband and I both went to UT back in the day. I know a lot has changed (like getting in, good grief!), but I wanted to make a plug for on-campus dorms. I lived in jester west, and made some lifelong friends on my hall. My husband went potluck and was in simpkins I think (no A/C), and his random roommate was, years later, best man at our wedding. So sometimes you meet the best people in the most ordinary places
@rbc2018 , that is so wild…this morning on my run, I LITERALLY prayed that God would pair up a lifelong friend in a roommate and that they might even be in each other’s weddings!! And then, after my shower, I read this post about your husband’s random roommate being his best man! Gotta love those little Holy Spirit hugs and reminders that I have nothing to worry about!
Awww that’s awesome. I should expand on my prior post-- His best man and two groomsmen were friends he met freshman year in the dorm. Two of my bridesmaids were friends I met freshman year in the dorm. We are still all friends to this day, although spread out in different states. Crazy how life happens, isn’t it??
Oh shoot, sorry. The way these discussions are displayed is not the most organized. Hopefully whoever needed to see the information saw it.
On my son’s floor in Blanton he only had eight residents plus himself, the RA. Most on the floor were singles but there were some who shared a room. I don’t know for sure if they were friends or if UT still .add them do that for cheaper rent. This semester he has about 16 on his floor and I’m not sure the arrangements. Many of the other floors in the quad had similar occupancy. I have a feeling next fall is going to be much more full. Hopefully that answered your questions.
I was wondering if anyone had any knowledge on how fast the Jester dorms fill up? I paid my $50 housing application fee in early November, but I’m not sure if that was early enough to guarantee a spot there.
when we paid $50 housing fee, we were not given any option to choose dorms? Did you all had to make the selection and give preference immediately as you paid $50?
If we didn’t give preference -how does this $50 housing fee helps?
2400 Nueces is an apartment building that is relatively new that UT recently took over in the last few years to use as a dorm. It’s nicer than any of the university dorms so that is another option that people should consider.
@diamondgem , the housing fee just gives you a timestamp for dorm selection later on. We didn’t fill out any selections or preferences either back in August. From my understanding, they will start giving out housing contracts March 1 and we can put dorm preferences but then we don’t actually log on until June to claim a spot. Someone please correct me if I’m wrong.
just got into ehp with a scholarship!!!
