When did you receive notification about dean’s honors scholars?
Thank you very much for the info.
Castilian also has “cruise-style” move in, and man, what a dream! It was 106 when my daughter moved in on August 15th.
does anyone have any insight on the kinsolving dorms? (Im going to be a mccombs freshman next year)
also for freshmen, are classes going to be more on south or north campus depending on your major, or are they going to be all over the place?
I think they will be all over campus for first year or so.
It’s all female and I’ve heard they have some of the best food
Thank you. That’s lot of essential information for a first time to be Freshman parent.
Is SRD on campus. Is meal plan available only for dorms that are on campus.
SRD is off-campus, but directly across the street on the north side. It includes meal plans, as does Hardin House and Callaway. I believe that Castillian also includes a meal plan.
Coming to visit campus March 25 or 26 (from Indiana) if anyone cancels their campus tour let us know
Does anyone know when the Castillian dorms fill up for the next academic year. I am thinking about getting a single dorm suite connected to another single dorm and I’m not sure if I want to go Castillian yet but I’m afraid if I wait too much then all the rooms will fill up. Does anyone know when usually the rooms become booked and no more space is available?
I’m not sure when they fill and I would think COVID makes it unreliable. But check with the dorm management because a lot of the private dorms will let you put down a deposit for a place but refund it later (and break lease) if you show that you did not attend UTAustin. Some say refund if not accepted to UTAustin while others say refund if do not attend UTAustin (or other Austin area college) so be specific with your questions.
Did you all receive acceptance letter / package in mail?
True except dorms like Callaway keep part of it even if you go elsewhere if I recall. They normally don’t fill up however after what is going on right now with the whole water, no power issue, freeze issue etc I believe they actually fared better than most. They did run out food and water at one point and had water shut off but they were communicative to students gave food vouchers to use at potbellies, we’re warm, and parents were generally happy. On campus dorms didn’t all have power, lines were ginormous, bathrooms were out where kids could only go to the first floor to use them in some cases (still going on), some were out of food, water also was an issue but UT has their now power grid so I don’t think any lost power. Classes were cancelled all last week and now another 3 days! It’s a cluster and not UT fault they’re all doing the best they can but be sure to ask around how the dorm your kid may want to live in has handled it.
For those interested in Hardin they were one of the first places to lose power earlier in the week. I don’t know anyone that lived there but if you do you should find out how they handled it and what they did with their residents. People couldn’t go anywhere as hotels were either closed or full.
Crazy times!
Private dorm leases are in the student’s names, even if they aren’t 18. The parent’s are the guarantors only.
Well, guarantors are the ones that get stuck with the bill, so…You can put lipstick on a pig but it is still a pig. The kids may sign the lease, but with no ability to pay, it will always come back on the parents. And if a kid isn’t 18, they can’t sign a legally binding contract and if they do, it isn’t valid.
Right, but the question was if the lease was in the parent or the kids name. It is in the kid’s name with the parent as the guarantor. I assume the person asking knew that guarantor means the parent is responsible. As for when the kid is 18 and signs the lease on their own behalf then they’re responsible. Callaway, for instance, requires financial information to sign the lease, so if a kid can’t prove they can afford it, then the parent will have to anyway. It doesn’t really matter ultimately because they basically have you pay way in advance anyway. I know we paid in full for the entire year in June. If you paid in 2 payments, you had to pay slightly more and the first half was still due in June, which was well before you moved in. So they had their money months before move in.
The issue of leases really is more of an issue for apartments and for parents and students out there, you need to make sure you have an adult preferably an attorney review any lease you sign. THere are many scumbag landlords that will try to take advantage when you leave because you tried to do something by yourself or without a parent and then suddenly the parent needs to get involved when you’ve been charged thousands upon move out and the landlords will come after you. Also, don’t just assume you can trust a roommate. Separate leases are a must and if you can’t get that, then have a lawyer draw up an indemnification agreement instead that protects you and your roommates from each other if one bails so that you can still go after that person later.
Definitely agree on having the document reviewed by an attorney. I have heard many nightmare stories about the way these apartment complexes treat kids, with regards to returning deposits, maintaining the properties, etc.
I know, right? Seems like common sense and then all of a sudden here’s the parent freaking that the kid is being charged 5k for damages. Where was the parent from day 1?
Too many people think a kid is 18 it makes them adult. No way!
Too true.
